Frank Delear, 92
Wolcott, Conn. - Frank J. Delear,
92,formerly of Centerville,died Jan.
25, 2006 after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Marion
(Robertsen) Delear for 65 years.
Mr. Delear was born in Boston
and was agraduate of Quincy High
School,where he was captain ofthe
track team.He earned abachelor's
degree in journalism from Boston
College in 1936, where he ran the
two-mile event as amember of the
track team.
He wasassistant sports editor for
thePatriot Ledger of Quincyin 1936
and 1937, and a reporter, feature
writer and aviation editor for the
Bridgeport, Conn. Post-Telegram
from 1937 to 1942.
In 1942, he joined the Chance
Vought Aircraft division of United
Aircraft Corp., later Sikorsky Air-
craft,inStratford,Conn.,aspublic-
ityrepresentative. Heretired in 1977
as public relations director.
A freelance writer on Cape Cod
since 1978,he wrote for newspapers
andmagazines.Hispublished works
also included five books: "Famous
First Flights Across the Atlantic,"
"Igor Sikorsky-His Three Careers
in Aviation," "The New World of
Helicopters ," "Helicopters and
Airplanes of the U. S. Army" and
"Airplanes and Helicopters of the
U.S. Navy."
In 1992 his Sikorsky biography
was reprinted in paperback as part
of Bantam Books air and space
series.
In 1985, two of his articles ap-
peared in Yankee Magazine's 50th
anniversary book, "The Best of
Yankee, 1935-1985." His script
writing for helicopter films won
national awards, as did his Sikorsky
biography.
He competed in road races and
track meets as a member of the
CapeCodAthletic Club andwon all-
American honors in his age groups
(69 through 79) at distances from
1,500 to 10,000 meters. In 1987, at
age 73, he ran his first marathon in
Los Angeles.
Hisinterest in senior running led
to a position as a freelance writer
with the Cape Cod Times.
He was a member of the Avia-
tion/Space Writers Association ,
the American Aviation Historical
Society, the 12 O'clock Scholars
of Cape Cod, and the Professional
Writers of Cape Cod, serving as
president in 1982 and 1983.
He was a member of St. Mary's
Episcopal Church in Barnstable,
serving on the vestry and stew-
ardship committees, and of the
Centerville Library Association.
He was also a member of the Har-
riet Quimby Research Conference
of Woodland Hills, Calif., and was
a director of the Aviation History
Information Center of Quincy.
Besides hiswife,survivorsinclude
two sons, David F.of Agoura Hills,
Calif., and James J. of West Hills,
Calif.; three daughters, Susan De-
lear-Fernald of Montgomery, Vt.,
Betsy Voight of Willimantic, Conn.,
and Janet Delear of Foothill Ranch,
Calif.; three granddaughters; two
grandsons; and many nieces and
nephews.
Ralph E. Harary, 77
North Dartmouth - Ralph E. Ha-
rary, 77, who leaves a son on Cape
Cod, died Feb. 4, 2006 at St. Luke's
Hospital in New Bedford.
He was the husband of Beatrice
(Kobrin) Harary.
Mr. Harary was born in Brook-
lyn, N.Y., and had lived in the New
Bedford area for 60 years. He was
the founder and owner of Harary
Jewelers in New Bedford, and was
amember ofTifereth Israel Congre-
gation and a 32nd degree Mason.

a son, Ely R. Harary of Cotuit; a
daughter, Celia Harary of Forest
Hills, N.Y.; two brothers , Jack
Harary of Brooklyn and Morris

Barbara J. Hedderig, 73
Hyannis - Barbara J. Hedderig,
73,ofHyannis and Englewood,Fla.,
died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006.
She was the wife of Donald A.
Hedderig Sr.
Mrs.HedderigwasborninBangor,
Maine, moved to Cape Cod in 1944
and graduated from Barnstable
High School in 1950.
She owned Barbara'sBeauty Sa-
lon in Hyannis and was one of the
originalmembers ofthe HyannisSe-
nior Citizens Villagers Club,where
she served in several positions.
Besides her husband, survivors
include a daughter, SherylTraeger
of East Brunswick, N.J.; two sons,
Donald A. Hedderig Jr. and Theo-
dore Hedderig, both of Marstons
Mills; six grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.

Fredrick Hyman, 86
West Orange, N.J. - Fredrick
Hyman, 86, died Wednesday, Feb.
1, 2006 at Whitehall, Boca Raton,
Fla.
He was the husband of Gail
Smith. He was also the husband of
the late Mildred (Alban) Hyman.
They were married 51years. .
Mr.Hyman was born in New York
City and lived in West Orange, N.J.,
for 33years before moving to Boca
Raton in 1990.
A skilled craftsman, he built
ships during World War II in the
Brooklyn Naval Shipyard Annex,
Bayonne, N.J.
In 1954he founded Grand Lumber
and Millwork Co. in Jersey City,
N.J., which he owned and operated
until 1988.
He enjoyed walking the beach,
surfcasting, bicycling and travel.
He loved spending time with his
children and grandchildren.

three children, Steven of New York
City,Kenneth of Stockton,N.J., and
Debra Bravman of Centerville; a
brother,Alvin of Carteret , N.J.; and
four grandchildren.

Robert V. Leeman, 71
Plymouth - Robert V. Leeman,
71, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006 at
Jordan Hospital after along illness
with multiple myeloma.
Hewasthehusband ofJoan (Barrows)
Leeman for 45 years.
Mr.LeemanwasbominWestBarnstable
and attended Barnstable public schools
and Ross Aviation in Oklahoma.
He served in the Air Force and
was employed by Cape and Islands
Airline. He finished his career as a
captain with US Airways after 25
years of service.

McDonald, 66, died Feb. 1, 2006 at
her home.
She was the wife of F.J. "Jack"
McDonald.
Mrs. McDonald was born in
Hyannis. She earned a bachelor's
degree from Northeastern Univer-
sity and amaster'sdegree inlibrary
sciencefrom SimmonsCollege. She
graduated summa cumlaude from
each school.
Shewas aformer longtime Read-
ing resident and areference librar-
ian at the Reading Public Library
for 20 years, retiring in 2003.
Besides her husband , survi-
vors include two sons, Geoffrey J.
McDonald of San Francisco and
Matthew P McDonald of South
Portland, Maine; a daughter, Amy
McDonald Rogers of Norwell; her
mother, Jessie (Lewis) Stringer of

of Osterville; two grandchildren;
and many nieces and nephews.

She was born and raised in
Medford.
She was an accomplished eques-
trian instructor and a real estate
investor.
Her interests included garden *
ing, cooking, dogs, cats, horses,
horseshoe playing and spending
time with family and friends.
She was an avid brass and harle-
quin mask collector.
She became a certified nursing
assistant in 1998.
Survivors include her longtime
companion, Robert L. Martin of
Centerville; three children, Steven
C. Cecere and Christine M. and
Angela R. Hogan; and her mother,
Martha Maiocco of Medford.
A celebration of her life willbe at

Martha Marsella , 69
South Attleboro - Martha "Lou"
Marsella, 69, who leaves family on
Cape Cod, died Friday, Feb. 3, 2006
at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in
Attleboro.
She was the wife of Guistino T.
"Sonny"Marsella for 50 years.
Mrs. Marsella was alifelong resi-
dent ofAttleboro and a 1954 gradu-
ate of Attleboro High School. She
joined her husband's family busi-
nessasacook and waitress,working
for more than 20 years at the Villa
Capri Restaurant in Wrentham.
She was later employed as office
manager for Whalen Engineeringin
North Attleboro for 14 years until
her retirement in 2002.
She was a communicant of St.
Joseph Church, Attleboro. She
enjoyed knittingand spending time
with her family and friends.
Besides her husband, survivors
include adaughter, Susan E. Clout-
ier of Lexington, S.C.; two sons,
Gary Michael Marsella of Dracut
and Justin T. Marsella of Alum
Bank,Pa.; two brothers,Michael H.
LaCroix of Attleboro and Stephen
LaCroix of Barnstable; and seven
grandchildren.

Pocasset - James Edward Mc-
Neill, 69, died Friday, Feb. 3, 2006
after a long illness.
He wasthe husband ofKatherine
(Boyle) McNeill for 47 years.
Mr.McNeillwasborninBrighton,
where he attended St. Columkille
High School, and earned a bache-
lor's degree from Boston College
in 1958. He was a former resident
of Cohasset and had lived on Cape
Cod for the past 15years.
Anactivefamilyman,he attended
and coached manysporting events,
and was happiest when helping
others. He was an avid golfer and
amember of the Pocasset Country
Clubandthe HatherlyCountryClub
in Scituate.

Walter F. Neale Jr., 83
Barnstable -WalterFrancisNeale
Jr.,83, died Thursday,Jan.26, 2006
after a 10-year, stroke-related ill-
ness.
He was the husband of the late
RuthE. (Webber) Neale.They were
married for 51years.
Mr. Neale was a Wentworth
Institute graduate and a master
machinist.
As a veteran of World War II sta-
tioned with the 30th Air Bombard-
ment Group in Tinian and again in
the Korean War he served as a top
gunner on the B-17, B-24 and B-29
in the Air Force.
After the war he married and
earned a business and mechanical
engineeringdegreefrom Northeast-
ern University in 1958.
Mr. Neale worked as a systems
analyst and later project director
for CASDO, a department of the
Air Force, as a civilian for 38 years
at Charlestown Navy Shipyard.
He was a lifelong churchgoer
and served as senior warden at St.
John's Episcopal Church, Jamaica
Plain. He was also a 55-year Mason
with the Eliot Hyde Park Lodge of
Needham.
After retiring to Barnstable, he
was president of the Council on
AginginHyannisand the Osterville
Men'sClub. He wasalso active with
St. Mary's Church, Barnstable.
He enjoyed spending time with
hisfamily,boating and quahogging.
An avid golfer, he was a member of
Cummaquid Golf Club.
Survivors include three sons,
Walter F. Neale III of Melbourne,
Fla.,WayneE.Neale ofNewbury and
DanaA.Nealeof Stonington,Conn.;
a sister, Anne (Neale) Harrison of
Varnville, S.C.; five grandchildren;
three great-grandchildren; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at
St. Mary's Episcopal Church in
Barnstable.

Nancy Nicoll, 76
Hyannis - Nancy Nicoll, 76, died
Sunday, Jan. 28, 2006 at Cape Cod
Hospital, Hyannis.
Ms. Nicollwasborn in Massachu-
setts and raised in Melrose. While
at Melrose High School, she was
the first female cheerleader for the
football team and the first female
head cheerleader. She was also a
soprano soloist, performing with
the Melrose First Baptist Church
adult choir.
She attended West Hill Junior
College in Boston, graduating first
in her class. Sheperformed the aria
"Un Bel Di" from Puccini's opera
Madama Butterfly to meet her
graduation requirements.
In her early twenties, she moved
to Lynn, where her flower gardens
and dozens of red tulips greeted all
who passed by.
She was a founding member
and officer of the Congregational
Church'sCouple'sClubandafound-
ing member of the Spotlighters,
for whom she performed the lead
role in their first production, The
Desert Song. The following year,
she performed in the lead role of
The Student Prince.
For many years, she taught
Sunday school and led a Girl
Scout troop at the Congregational
Church.
She also studied oil painting
and water colors, and created a
small collection of seascapes and
still lifes.
The achievement she was most
proud of was her several years'
participation inthe March ofDimes
Mothers' March.
SinceretiringtoCapeCodin 1983,
Ms. Nicoll was an active member of
the FirstBaptist ChurchinHyannis.
She belonged to the church choir,
participated in the annual Christ-
mas "Marketplace"re-enactment,
assisted in the Sunday school and
the annualChristmasfair, attended
Bible study, planted the flower
garden for the thrift shop doorway,
and served on the diaconate for two
years. And for 10 years she rolled
bandages for the church's White
Cross group for relief missions in
Haiti.
She loved the Boston Symphony
Orchestra, which she often de-
scribed as the finest orchestra in
the world.
Survivors include three daugh-
ters , Deborah Shultz of Lynn,
Barbara Shultze of Stoneham and
Martha Nugent of Yarmouthport;
and three grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at
First Baptist Church, Main Street,
Hyannis.

Hyannis - Gary C. Oakland, 53,
died Tuesday,Jan. 31,2006 at Cape
Cod Hospital, Hyannis.
Mr. Oakland was born in Provi-
dence, R.I., and was a graduate of
New England School of Art and
Design. He lived on the Cape for
more than 30 years.
He was the store manager at
Silver Unicorn for 13years and an
avid artist.In the mid-1970s, he was
the lead singer for the rock group
Orphun Annie.
Survivors include his father and
stepmother, William and Daisy
Oakland; two brothers, Ronald W
Oakland and Scott F.Oakland;and
two nieces.

Walter R. Perry Sr., 75
Milpitas, Calif. - Walter Richard
Perry Sr., 75, died Monday, Jan. 30,
2006 at the VeteransAdministration
Hospital of Palo Alto.
He was the husband of the
late Bernadette M. (Cavanaugh)
Perry and the late Doris (Rodg-
ers) Perry.
Mr. Perry was born in Boston,
raised in Hyannis and graduated
from Barnstable High School in
1949.
He was an Air Force veteran.
In 1972 he moved to California,
where he lived in Milpitas for the
past 11 years.
He was an avid sports fan and
loved to golf, participating in many
tournaments.
Survivors include two sons, Mi-
chaelT Perry Sr.ofWest Barnstable
and Kevin J. Perry of Pittsburg; a
sister, Maryanne Gile of Lompoc;
a brother, Richard Perry of Ocean
City, Md.; three grandchildren; a
great-granddaughter; and several
nieces and nephews.
He was also the father of the late
Walter Richard Perry

Dr. Edward W. Roberts
West Barnstable - Edward W
Roberts died Saturday,Jan.28,2006
at Cape Regency Nursing Home in
Centerville.
He was the husband of Janet
Mapletoft Roberts for 55 years.
Dr. Roberts was born in Orange,
N.J., and graduated from East Or-
ange High School in 1941.
He served three years in the
Army Air Forces during World War
II, including 18 months with the
ground crew of the 8th Air Force
in England.
In 1947, he graduated from Wes-
leyan University, where he was an
officer of Delta Taw Delta Frater-
nity. In 1952, he graduated from
the University of Maryland Dental
School.
Dr. Roberts practiced general
dentistry in Livingston, N.J., for
40 years.
