J^ -^ The Barnstable Patriot ' ¦¦» mid BHS girls hockey clinches tourney berth Win over Dux- bury puts Raiders into post-season By David Curran dcurran@barnstablepatriot.com DAVID CURRAN PHOTO SHOOTER - Stephanie Scarpato (13) fires a shot on goal during the Raiders' 1-1 tie with Falmouth in Hyannis Wednesday. The BHS girls hockey team Saturday picked up its 10th win of the season, and with it a berth in the state tourna- ment, beating Duxbury 7-1 at ArmstrongArenainPlymouth Saturday. "We're really not thinking about that just yet," coach Kim Sullivan said after the Raiders tied Falmouth 1-1 at Kennedy Rink in Hyannis Wednesday."We're excited to make the state tournament but that's secondary right now" With five games left on the schedule, she said, the team was still focusing on the Southeastern Mass. Girls Hockey League. The Raiders (10-4-1 overall, 9-3-1 in the league,6-1-1inthe South Divi- sion) can add to their division point totalwhen Nauset visits Kennedy tomorrow. "It's important not to look too far ahead, focus on the task at hand," she said. Despite outshooting Falmouth 34-14, Sullivan said the tie was not frustrating. "I thought it was an ex- cellent game," she said. "I thought we dominated all three zones. We stayed with our game plan. We outhshot them,we outplayed them, we outhustled them. We're very proud of how our teamplayed. Ithink Falmouth isvery lucky to get away with a tie." "Wewere like asea of red all over them,"she added, saying shewould welcome arematch in the tournament. Falmouth beat Barnstable 1-0 in the third game of the season. Sophomore Sophie Fizell gave the Raiders an early lead Wednesday, with an as- sist going to freshman Claire Toffey. The lead held up until mid- way through the second pe- riod, when Falmouth scored on the power play to tie it. The shotsongoalaccurately reflected Barnstable'sterrito- rialadvantage over the course of the game. "We were like a sea off red all over then," Sullivan said, adding, "What you saw today was a display of team unity. We're very fortunate. Most teams have a weak link. We don't and I think that showed tonight." BHS tracksters finish with passel of personal bests Boys third in league, girls fourth By David Curran dcurran@barnstablepatriot.com It came down to num- bers. Marshfield had them, Barnstable didn't.And that's why Marshfield , won the Old Colony League boys and girls winter track championships at the ReggieLewisTrack and Athletic Center in Roxbury Monday. "Everybody did well, a bunch of kids placed, a ton of (personal records)," BHS coach Justin Messier said. "Marshfield took the meet with numbers." The Barnstable boys, with fewer than 20 athletes, ended up third with 42.5 points - Marshfield scored 63 and Bridgewater-Raynham 54.5 - while the Raider girls, few- er than 10 deep, finished fourth with 15points, behind Marshfield's 80, B-R's 70 and Taunton's 29. The meet, coming on the heelsof the Mass. State Track Coaches Association Invita- tional and Elite Invitational meets Saturday and Sunday, also at the Lewis Center, fea- tured a couple of interesting subplots. After missing a spot in Sunday's Elite meet by five places, senior shot putter Me- lissa Doherty won the event at Saturday 's Invitational with a 34-foot-7.5-inch toss that would have placed fifth in afield of 24 Sunday, setting up a showdown Monday with 35-foot-2-inch throw. Doherty won the face-to- face with a 35-foot-8.5-inch throw, bettering her personal record by almost a foot. "She was happy," Messier said. "I'm proud of her." Twin sister Meaghen Doherty, meanwhile , was ninth Saturday with a 31- foot-8.5-inch throw and third Monday with apersonal-best 32-foot-10.5-inch toss. "If they keep up the current trend, they can both get to (New England) regionals ," Messier said Senior distance runner Greg Karukas, who is try- ing to get his time in the mile down to 4:35 by early spring to claim a spot on next year 's University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill team, ran a 4:52.29 to finish 54th Saturday, then turned in a personal-best 4:47.46 Monday, finishing third and qualifying for the South Sectional meet Feb. 18.That willgive him another chance to push his limits against a strong field. Seniors Michael Rubino and Martin Zampa and ju- niors BrianTurnbullandNick Cantella set a new school record in the 4x200-meter relay Saturday, finishingthird in 1:36.86. Barnstablehad three repre- sentatives at Sunday's Elite meet. Wrestlers ready... DAVID CURRAN PHOTO TO THE VICTOR... - Barnstable 's KyleCocozza has hishandraisedin victory after pinning his opponent duringthe Raiders' 45-24 win over Durfee last week. CONTINUED FROM PAGE A:10 Web site ranks Sanz fifth , sec- ond in Division 1behind New Bedford' s Dennis Paiva, who has beaten Sanz three times this season, the last time by a razor-thin 2-0 margin. "I think (Sanz) is capable of beating (Paiva)," Magner said. "He's come close every time." Other Raiders Magner said could advance are seniors Mike Amick (171 pounds) and Pete Loumiotis (189 pounds); sophomores Nick Barreto (125 pounds), ThiagoHoffmann (130 pounds) and Richie Joyal (119 pounds); and freshman Alejan- dro Sanz (135 pounds). Magner said Amick, in just his second season of wrestling, brings a potent combination of athleticism and balance to the mat. "He gets better every day," said the coach. "He's capable of pinning the state champion. He's a talent. If he's at his best, anything is possible." Loumiotis has been prepar- ing hard for the post-season , aiming to advance beyond the sectional. "I wish I had more time to prepare," he said two weeks ago."It'd be myfirst time (mak- ing the state tournament ) and I'd like to at least go out with that." Barreto came to Barnstable this year after wrestling in Florida "He's turned out to be a re- ally tough kid for me this year," Magner said. Alejandro Sanz is in a tough weight class tomorrow,Magner said. "He might have a chance," said the coach. "He certainly deserves it." The Raiders last Saturday saw their five-meet win streak come to anend withthree losses in Somerset , falling to 12-9 on the season. Gonzalo Sanz missed the meet with a neck strain, and Joyal didn't make his 119-pound weight limit, forcing lineup changes. The meets were close enough that having the elder Sanz in action and Joyalwrestlingat 119might have made the difference in all three, Magner said. "It just wasn't good timing," he said. Wellesley beat the Raiders 38-27, KingPhillipof Wrentham won 45-30, and Somerset won 40-27. Alejandro Sanz won all three of his matches, while Amick, Barreto , Hoffmann , Glenn and junior Ryan Callanan (152 pounds) each had two wins. Joyal (at 125 pounds), senior Rob Greer (215 pounds) junior Jason Corman (145 pounds), andfreshman KyleCocozza (160 pounds) each had one win.
