Bob After 45 years at the Hyannis docks, Bob St. Pe- ter calls it a day By David Still dstill@barnstablepatriot.com DAVID STILL II PHOTO A NEW DAY FOR CAPT. BOB - Bob St. Peter sold the Capt. Bob last month, but the ship will remain at the Hyannis docks. It's not expected to continue as a charter fishing vessel. Call it a forced retirement. For 45 years, Bob St. Peter of Hyannis operated a party boat out ofthe Hyannisdocks. It wasn't a desire to get out of the game that led him to sell his boat, Capt. Bob, last month, but the realization that catch limits would push him into the red. "I didn't really want to get out of the business,"St.Peter said. "I loved the business." "The business"for the Capt. Bob was fishing, a "six-pack charter," as St. Peter some- times callsit. His clientswere usuallyfromthe city; not Bos- ton,but NewYork.Theywould load onto buses in The Bronx or someequallyurbanlocation the nightbefore, arriveearlyin the morning and head out for a day's fishing, loading back on the buses in the evening for the trek home. It is a commitment in both time and money, but no one particularly cared as long as the fish were biting, andfor St. Peter, they always did. "We always found fish," he said proudly. The primary target was scup, or porgies, depending onwhereyou'refrom. St.Peter saidthat the Cape'ssouthern waters always had plenty, even before the Mid-Atlantic FisheryManagement Council started limitingdaily catches for recreational fishermen. Limiting began in 2000 , with a 100-fish limit for party vessels, moving to 60, then 60 in season (July & August) and 40 out, until now, with a 60/20 split. Last year, St. Peter said he was lucky to break even, and it gave him pause. He told himself that if limits didn't increase,he'dselltheboat and call it a career on the docks. His deadline? Jan. 1. The new year rolled around and no word on the limits. He held offcontactingaboat bro - ker, but eventually put ahad- made sign in the window. "It's a miracle, really," he said of the sale. "A Sandwich man saw the sign, rang himup and was in- terested inthe boat.Asked for aprice, St. Peter said $30,000 with some additional work and $25,000 as is. The man went home to think about it, and so did St. Peter. He said he couldn't figure howthe numberswouldwork. Last season, everyone got paid, including his vendors, his insurance man, the town for the slipandhiscrew of one. He,on the other hand, walked away with nothing more than the memory of the season. St. Peter also said that he couldn't see people making the trip from New York for sometimes 20 fish. "I called him back and said $20,000," St. Peter said. He'd become a motivated seller. After an inspection and the passing of a bank check, the life-long Hyannis resi- dent, now 75, found himself retired. He saidthat there had been attempts by he and others in the party boat industry to fight the regulations, but they were of little use. His analysis of the fishery tells him that overfishing in the New York and New Jersey area really hurt the popula- tions there , but here, the fishing remains good. St. Peter will continue to work, helping out a buddy in a medical device fabricating business, but he's also plan- ning to spend time with his family. CCCC and tech council to collaborate Cape Cod Community Col- lege (CCCC) and the Cape Cod Technology Council (CCTC) announced a collaboration intended to provide strong linkswithinthe business com- munity, help working profes- sionals develop andhone their skills, support the economic development of the region, and encourage students to enterthe much-needed career areas of Science, Technol- ogy, Engineering, and Math (STEM).
