I find that as I am getting
older, I am more anxious to
see good things get accom-
plished. Havingbeen avolun-
teer on town committees for
25years and directlyinvolved
in municipalgovernment for
twoyearsnow,Iamdismayed
at how slowly we move.
That is not meant to be a
reflection on any particular
person or cause, but it's the
reality of having to deal with
so many masters and trying
to please the masses. It's
all part of the adjustment
process coming from private
sector work to public sector
work.
It wasn't very long ago
when I was asked to write
my first West Barnstable
column for the Patriot, and
now I'm writing my 16th. I
often wonder what you might
be interested inreading here,
but I have heard from you
that something I wrote has
struck a cord or was infor-
mative.
Usuallyyour comments are
positive, but once in a while
[someone disagrees with me,
-which is OK. Since we are
•beginning 2006, 1thought it
¦
opportune to ask what you
•would like to read about
in these weekly councilor
columns. Your suggestions
will help us focus on things
_ that are important to you,
;so please feel free to share
Jjyour comments with my col-
leagues and me.
I Recently there was an ar-
f
tide in the Cape Cod Times
about my goals for the town
council and the town in
general as I begin my term
as the town council presi-
dent. Havingspent my entire
working career (38 years)
in the banking business in
Barnstable, I have a strong
sense for the importance of a
healthy,growingcommercial
base for the fiscal well being
of our community. I have
a firm perspective about
common sense , fairness ,
accountability and fiscal
responsibility.
And I have a tendency to
tell it like I see it.
As aresult of that newspa-
per article, I received many
positive endorsements on
my comments from citizens
of all walks of life. I also
had positive comments from
town officialsinseveralother
neighboring communities
who shared my opinions.
I want to address the two
items I had most comments
on: As I mentioned before,
the town council willbe more
involvedinthe annualbudget
process this year than in re-
cent memory.I alsowelcome
the Comprehensive Finan-
cial Advisory Committee's
(CFAC) involvement , and
thank Manager Klimm for
including CFACin a more in
depth review of the proposed
capital budget, and for the
first time, the entire town's
operating budget. CFAC
