BHS boys hockey taking it
one shift at a time
Coach calls tomorrow's
Marshfield contest at
Kennedy "huge"
DAVID CURRAN PHOTO
NO SECONDS -BHS goalie Luke Harris guards against a rebound after
turning aside the first shot during second-period action in the Raiders'
2-1 win over Needham Monday. Coach George DeMello said Harris
turned in his best game of the season.

The BHS boys hockey
team that beat Needham
2-1 at Kennedy Memorial
Rink in Hyannis wasn't the
same team that started the
season.
The players were the
same, but the game they
played wasn't.
After staking themselves
to a2-0 lead midwaythrough
the third period, the Raiders
held on to win 2-1, some-
thing they'd had a difficult
time doing with 2-0 leads
earlier in the season.
"That' s a young team
showing the maturity, the
progression that's taken
place in the last 8-9 weeks,"
said coach George DeMello
after the Raider had evened
their record at 5-5-4
"Needham's a very, very
good hockey team,"DeMello
said. "This was the biggest
win of the year for us. I'm
real proud of the way all the
players played, hard, tough.
I just want it to continue."
He'd like to see it carry
over to what he called a
"huge league game" tomor-
row against Marshfield at
Kennedy.
"Marshfield's an excellent
team," he said. "We'll need
to have the same type of
performance Saturday night
as we had tonight, from all
our players."
The win put the Raid-
ers on pace to qualify for
the state tournament if
they can maintain a .500
record through their final
six games.
"We're not even thinking
about the tournament ,"
said the coach. "All we're
thinking about is one shift
at a time."
Junior Brett Carreiro
had Barnstable 's first goal
against Needham, an unas-
sisted tally in a first period
thoroughly dominated by
the home club. Sophomore
Kyle Phelan doubled the
marginwhen he converted a
pretty feed from senior Mike
Garbacik six minutes into
the third period , giving the
team nine minutes to guard
that 2-0 advantage.
The rest of the third peri-
od was unusuallywide-open
for the late stages of a 2-0
hockey game. Having tried
many ways to protect many
2-0 leads, DeMello said,that
was by design.
"We said, 'Just keep doing
what you're doing, boys,'
and it worked out for us,"
said the coach.
Needham narrowed the
margin to a goal with 3:31
to play, and had one shot
slide tantalizingly close to
the post in the final minute,
but couldn't register the
equalizer.
DeMello said leadership
from Garbacik and senior
goalie Luke Harris keyed
the win.
"I thought that was (Har-
ris') best game of the sea-
son," said the coach, adding
Garbacik showed "a great
work ethic tonight."

his opponent , he made good
his next opportunity early in
round two, returning to the
bench to a hero 's welcome
with the Raiders up 15-13.
"That was the turning
point ," said the elder Sanz.
"Kyle just stepped it up a
notch. "
Senior tricaptain Pete Lou-
miotis scored a second-round
pin at 189 pounds, and Glenn
followed with a 33-second
domination.
"I just wanted to go out
there and wrestle smart and
wrestle strong, " said Loumi-
otis.
"My technique I know was a
bit sloppy." said Glenn, "but
I was really aggressive. I took
it to him. That's all that mat-
tered tonight."
Joyal wrapped up the scor-
ing with a third-round pin.
"Every kid on the team
fought hard tonight ,"Magner
said.
After the comeback Satur-
day morning against Sand-
wich , Barnstable finished
the day with a 53-16 win over
Nauset and a 40-26 win over
Maiden Catholic. Six Raiders
went unbeaten on the day,
with Glenn and Hoffmann
each scoringthree pins. Glenn
was extended beyond the
first minute only once and no
wrestler lasted a full round
against him, while Hoffmann
had to go the second round
only once.
Barreto and Gonzalo Sanz
each had two pins and a deci-
sion, while Nunes and Joyal
had two pins and a forfeit.
Other winners included se-
nior Mike Amick (two pins) .
Loumiotis (a pin and a de-
cision) , Alejandro Sanz (a
technical fall and a decision)
and Callanan andjunior Jason
Cormai. (one pin each).

BHS boys track

The Dohertys, formerly soc-
cer players in the fall, had track
in mind when they switched
sports for last season.
"We did cross country be-
cause we wanted the throw-
ers and the runners to be
together," Melissa said.
"It'skind of like two teams,
but we ride the same bus,"
said Meaghen of the divide
they wanted to breach.
The team has one more cap -
tain, Turnbull - one of those
rare but not unheard ofjunior
captains.
"Iactually looked forward to
it," Turnbull said of his lead-
ership role. "People here are
pretty easy to work with."
The boys team hashad to do
without the talents of senior
distance runner Mike Ibanez ,
who has been out with a knee
injury. His consistent presence
at meets and practices won
Messier 's admiration.
But Ibanez wanted to talk
about senior Nate Roberts,
calling him "the story of the
season." Roberts ' hard work
has yielded tremendous im-
provement - and respect.
"He's doing stuff now that
I really don't think anyone
could've imagined him doing,"
Ibanez said.
For his own part , Ibanez ad-
mitted to some frustration.
"We're going into the league
meet tied, winner take all,"
he said. "I would've liked to
help ."
