Cape Cod Academy celebrates science New building features Foucault pendulum, mod- ern lab space and equipment EDWARD F MARONEY PHOTO SPACESHIP EARTH - The heart of Cape Cod Academy's new science building is the four-story enclosure for a Foucault pendulum, another design by architect Ted Bellingrath. The satellite map of Cape Cod is from New England Reprographics of West Yarmouth. EDWARD F MARONEY PHOTC THIS REFLECTS WELL ON YOU - Cape Cod Academy Headmaster Tom Evans presents the ceremonial key to the new science building to Science Chair Patricia Bartlett. By Edward F. Maroney emaroney@barnstablepatriot.com Cape Cod Academy marked the almost-opening last week of "a science buildingthat any college would be proud to call its own," in the words of Headmaster Tom Evans. Upper school students at the Osterville campus will move into their newlab rooms after schoolvacation later this month, according to science department chair Patricia Bartlett. Count Bartlett as one of the many admirers of Ted Bellingrath, the late Oster- ville architect who designed the four-story building and its soaring enclosure for a Foucault pendulum. "About five years ago, the architect met withthe science department collectively and then each of us individually and visited classes so that he wouldknowthe sorts ofthings we knew," Bartlett recalled. "He was a very, very good listener as well as a brilliant architect." Each teacher,Bartlett said, "had different ideas about our classrooms. (Bellingrath) liked the idea of individual- izing the rooms and not just having one plan. He and the physics teacher (Christopher Kelly) and Mr. Evans were the ones who thought of the pendulum." Said pendulum wasthe cen- terpiece of last week's events, withstudents ConnorMcCann and Lorisa Vellone snipping a ribbon to setitinmotion above asatellite photograph of Cape Cod, the Islands and South- eastern Massachusetts. A fact sheet records that thiswasthe last availablefrom the Califor- niaAcademyofSciences, which once made pendulums for the BostonMuseumofScience, the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, and the Smith- sonian in Washington, D.C. Evans called the map pro- vided byNewEngland Repro- graphics of West Yarmouth "remarkable.Youcan find the wakes of the ferries going to the Islands." Looking up four floors to rings of students peering down, Evans said the build- ing "wasn't just another job to (Bellingrath). This atrium and the pendulum were his special joy." Observing the Swarovski crystalballssuspended inthe atrium to catch and refract sunlight, Evans said, "These nine jewels can be thought of as his presence with us. When you see rainbows, think of him."
