The Insurance In- stitute for Highway Safety tested the seat and head- restraint combinations of 44 SUVs and 15 pickups. It ranked just six SUVs with a "Good" score, while none of the pickups received the highest rating. Only the seats in the Ford Freestyle, Honda Pilot , Jeep Grand Chero- kee, Land Rover LR3, / £\ Subaru Forester and ^ / VolvoXC90 earned the Insti- tute'shighest score of Good. The Institute rates the seat andhead-restraint combina- tions in two stages. It first does static measurements to determine the height and distance behind the back of the head. Restraints that receive Good or Acceptable scores on this part of the test are evaluated in a dynamic test with amovable platform that simulatesacollision and measures the forces to the neck of a crash test /4*\ dummy. \/ ¦ "* Camaro May Return ¦ General Motors may produce its Chevrolet Camaro concept. The car was one of the biggest hits of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit recently. The company acknowledged it , is on a short list of possible vehicles that could be added to the lineup of rear-wheel drive cars. GM J executives say that if the Camaro is produced it would have a V-6 engine as standard equipment 8 and at least one V-8 engine offered as an option. The small car, which replaces the W Dodge Neon, will start at $13,995. ' more slowly '"•—/ > than originally planned. The company said last summer that the replacement vehicle would go on sale in three or four years. Now it says that the vehicle will most likely not be ready in that time- frame. Instead expect it in 2009 at the earliest. When it does arrive, Acura execu- tives have said that the new vehicle will be powered by a V-10 engine, something not offered in any of the compa- ny's other vehicles. MM MM MM MM MM MM MM MM MM ^7 Convertible Rolls Rolls-Royce has decided to produce a convertible ver- sion of its Phantom. Produc- tion of the ultra-luxury car will begin in about a year. There's no word yet on how many convertible Phantoms will be built, but the company has said that it will charge a premiumfor the ragtop. The 2006 Rolls-Royce Phantom sedan costs about $325,000. Tara Baukus Mello, a Hyannis native, owes her passion for cars to her father, who gave her an appreciation for all things automotive. Together they built a 1932 Ford pickup street rod,which won a national award in 1992 and launched her career as an automotive journal- ist.
