Historical Society names new trustees

The
Osterville His-
torical Society &
Museum's annual
meeting was held Jan. 12 at
Wimpy's Restaurant with
nearly 50 members in at-
tendance. Welcomed were
four new board members:
Alison Audiert, C. Eldon
Lawson, Hugh MacColI, and
Barnes Riznik, who were
elected to a three-year term.
Alice Alger, Carol Allen,
Paul Chesbro, and Barbara
Kessel were re-elected to a
second term.
During the evening Willis
H. Leonard was honored ,
posthumously, with the cov-
eted Grace Chesbro Award,
named after the former
president of the Osterville
Historical Society known for
her dedicated and tireless
efforts at furthering the
society's mission of preserv-
ing history."Willis Leonard
was an incredible volunteer
in the Boat Shops who gave
instructive and knowledge-
able tours to visitors. Willis
loved the Museum and we
miss his presence," said Dr.
Will Price, president of the
society.
The business meeting
recapped a banner year
at the Historical Society
which included the hiring
of Cathy Wright to oversee
the collection in her role as
part-time curator; a new
school/museum program
through which 400 students
from the Horace Mann
Charter School toured the
museum; and continued
building improvements that
included a new roof , side-
wall re-shingling, foundation
repairs, and refurbishment
of the Children's room.
Volunteers were thanked for
their effort s in helping with
the photo collection, special
events, and museum tours.
Rod Rowland, chair of
the nominating committee,
introduced the new board
members, reading a brief bio
on each, to the membership.
ALISON HALL
AUDIBERT
Alison grew up on Parker
Road in a Cape Cod
house built by her parents.
Delton Crosby Hall and
Anne Reid Hall, which was
located next to the home of
Captain Alexander Bacon,
her great great grandfather.
She has a deep apprecia-
tion for Osterville and its
history, and enjoys sailing
the bays and the waters of
Nantucket Sound. Alison's
grandmother, Ethel Crosby
Hall, was the daughter of
Herbert Crosby and Helen
(West) Crosby.
Alison has two daughters
and four grandchildren.
She worked as a reception-
ist in the medical field for
20 years; her husband Don
worked for the Osterville
Post Office, and for the Oys-
ter Harbors Club. A lifelong
member of the United Meth-
odist Church, she is serving
on the committee to write
and preserv e the church's
history.
HUGH MACCOLL
Hugh MacColI has been
a long-time summer
resident of Osterville. He is
a former board member of
the Wianno Club, and served
as chairman of the Wianno
Tennis committee for many
years. Hugh started his sail-
ing career by racing Juniors ,
and then moved on to the
Senior class. He has been a
docent in the Boat Sheds for
three years, and volunteers
for most of our events.
Hugh has an impressive
banking background with
the (former) New England
Merchant Bank, and has
also worked for New Eng-
land Executive Service
Corps, a public relations
firm, which advises non-
profits on financial matters.
AL LAWSON
Al
Lawson has been an
Osterville resident for
49 years and is married to
Adrianne. They have two
sons. With a master 's degree
from Harvard University,
Al taught school for eight
years before serving as
Director of Guidance at
Barnstable High School for
30 years. Still involved with
education , Al is a student
interviewer for Harvard,
taking great pride when
interviewing local students!
He is active in several com-
munity associations , having
served as founding member
and former president of the
Cape and Islands Guidance
Association.
Al enjoys sailing, golf ,
skiing, and biking, and
has been a member of the
Wianno Yacht Club for 27
years, serving 14 years on
the race committee. He is a
dedicated volunteer in the
Boat Shops and enjoyed
volunteering for the "Kids
in the Museum" program
the Osterville Historical
Society developed for fifth
grade Horace Mann Charter
School students this past
September.
BARNES RIZNIK
With a PH.D. in History
from Stanford Uni-
versity, Barnes Rink has an
extensive background in
museums, having served as
Director at the Aioli Mis-
sion House and Grove Farm
Homestead in Kauai, Hawaii
where in 2001 he was pre-
sented with the Governor 's
Preservation Honor Award
from the Historic Hawaii
Foundation. Additionally
he was Vice President for
Museum Administration
and Interpretation for Old
Sturbridge Village.
His storied career also
includes exhibit imple-
mentation, and facilitating
major projects such as an
orientation film "After the
Revolution" at Old Stur-
bridge Village. He has re-
viewed various articles and
authored numerous publica-
tions and articles. Barnes
has published three books
and has one forthcoming.
Locally, Barnes serves as
Trustee for the Cahoon Mu-
seum of American Art and
last year had the honor of
being guest curator, design-
ing and implementing "In
the Beginning: The Deco-
rated Furniture of Ralph &
Martha Cahoon. "
The 75" anniversary of
the Osterville Historical
Society will be marked this
year, beginning June 10 with
a "Diamond Jubilee -- 75
Years of Keeping History,"
a dinner/auction chaired by
Jacquie Martin.
The Ostervill e Historical
Museum complex includes
the Captain Parker House
filled with 11 rooms of art,
antiques and special exhib-
its; the Cammett House, a
unique Cape "half house"
featuring furnishings dating
from the mid 1800s; and the
Boat Shops that display six
full-size models of wooden
Catboats , a Wianno Senior
and Junior and photo exhib-
its highlighting Osterville 's
boat building history. Con-
