OBITUARIES
Edwin B. Athearn, 92
Centerville - Edwin B. Athearn,
92, died Jan. 18, 2006, at Cape Cod
Hospital in Hyannis.
Mr. Athearn was born in West
Tisbury and worked on an offshore
sword fishing boat at the age of
13.
As an adult, he owned and oper-
ated fishing and passenger boats
on Martha's Vineyard and in Fal-
mouth.
In 1940, he became captain of
the Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institute research vessel, Anton
Dohrn. During World War II, when
the U.S.Bureau of Ships controlled
both the ship and the institute,Mr.
Athearn wasawarded aspecial com-
mendation for his service during
an extensive study of ocean water
temperatures.
In 1947, he established Athearn
Marine Agency, which specialized
in brokerage of commercialvessels.
His expertise in wooden vessels
was recognized along the eastern
seaboard.
In later years he compiled stories
from his life experiences and wrote
Chronicle of an Islander, Martha's
Vineyard History and Adventure ,
as well as many articles published
in Offshore magazine and other
periodicals.
Survivors include a nephew ,
DonaldAthearn of Deny, N.H.; two
nieces, Judy Athearn of Martha's
VineyardandJean (Athearn) Daigle
of Pennsylvania;andlongtime com-
panion Shirley T. Christophers of
Centerville.
A funeral was held at Chapman,
Cole & Gleason Funeral Home in
Oak Bluffs. BurialwasinOak Grove
Cemetery in Vineyard Haven.

Brookline -Ann Baker, 94,also of

Baker.
Mrs.BakerwasborninRussiaand
raised in Arlington and New York
City. She was alsoformerly of Con-
cord,Augusta,Maine,andRoxbury.
She had been a recent resident of
the Fairlawn in Lexington.
As a resident of Brookline, Mrs.
Baker was a volunteer for the
Brookline Association for Mental
Health, the Benefit Shop of the
Driscoll School and the PTO in the
Brookline public schools.
Survivorsinclude two sons, Ken-
neth Baker of Hanover, N.H., and
Paul Baker of Acton; a sister, Mary
Locke of Concord; and three grand-
children.

William J. Boyle, 92
Hyannis - William J. Boyle, 92,
died Jan. 6, 2006 , at Cape Cod
Hospital.
He was the husband of the late
Agnes (Beatty) Boyle.
Mr. Boyle was born, raised and
educated in New York City.
During World War II. he was a
medic in the Army.
In 1977, he moved from Marn-
aroneck, N.Y., to Cape Cod after
retiring from General Tire and
Rubber Co.
For many years he was a vol-
unteer at Cape Cod Hospital, the
Gleaners and St. Vincent DePaul
Society.
A funeral Mass was celebrated
at St. Francis Xavier Church in
Hyannis.

Margaret White Campbell, 95
Bedford - Margaret Risk White
Campbell, 95. died Jan. 13, 2006,
at her home.
She wasthe wife of the late John
Randolph "Randy" Campbell.
Mrs. Campbell was born in Sum-
mit,N.J., and educated at the Kent
Place School, Vassar College and
Columbia University. She pursued
a lifelong passion for drama and
education. During summers off
from herteachingpostsinNewYork
and Boston, she and friend Sally
Jenkins inaugurated and directed
the Cape Cod Theatre School in
Barnstable.
A noted independent secondary
school administrator, she served
as head of the Upper School at
Beaver Country Day School in
Chestnut Hill and founding head
of the Colorado Springs School in
Colorado Springs, Colo., the first
independent secondary school for
girls in the area.
Duringthe summers,Mrs. Camp-
bell relished time at her "Blue
Shutters" home, built by her fa-
ther at the turn of the century on
Craigville Bay.
She served as an officer of the
West Hyannisport Beach Associa-
tion andwas aformidable defender
ofthe old ways:keepinggravelroads
unpaved, the rights of way cleared
and enforced,and the beach devoid
of uninvited guests above the mean
high-tide line.
She was a strong leader, had
an intense interest in people and
loved dogs.
Survivors include a son, John
Randolph Campbell; a daughter,
Margaret Risk Campbell; two
grandsons; and many nieces and
nephews.
Amemorial service willbe held at
10:30 a.m. Jan. 28 in Story Chapel
at Mount Auburn Cemetery, 580
Mount Auburn St. in Cambridge.

Laura A. Daly, 96
West Yarmouth - Laura A. (Ca-
tino) Daly, 96, died Jan. 19, 2006,
at Cape Regency Nursing Home in
Centerville.
She was the wife of Edmund J.
Daly and Attilio Pirone, who died
in 1972. i
Mrs. Daly was born in Worcester
and raised in Shrewsbury, where
she attended Shrewsbury High
School.
As a homemaker, she enjoyed
cooking, gardening and bowling.
She was a member of St. Fran-
cis Xavier Church in Hyannis and
formerly a member of Our Lady of
Mount Carmel in Worcester.
Shewasactive with the American
Red Cross blood drives in Worces-
ter and on the Cape, the Progres-
sive Club, United Elderly, and the
Barnstable Senior Citizens and
sang with the Cape Cod Chorale.
She was also involved with the
annual Catholic Charity Appeal of
the Fall River Diocese.
Besides her husband, survivors
include a daughter, Mary Olsen
of Shrewsbury; five stepchildren,
William Daly of Hyannis, John
"Buzz" Daly and Jennifer Rapp,
both of Centerville, Richard Daly
of Marstons Mills and Susan Carey
of Yarmouthport; two grandchil-
dren; three great-grandchildren; a
great-great-grandchild;and several
nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late
Gloria L. Latour.
A Mass of Christian burial was
celebrated at St. Francis Xavier
Church inHyannis.Burialfollowed,
in Mountain View Cemetery in
Shrewsbury.
Grace C. DeWitt, 91
Osterville - Grace C. DeWitt, 91,
diedJan.19,2006,atMaryMcCarthy
Hospice House in Sandwich.
She was the wife of Ernest W.
DeWitt.
Mrs. DeWitt was born and edu-
cated in Chicago, where she lived
untilmoving to Osterville 29 years
ago. She was a member of the Os-
terville United Methodist Church
and volunteered at the church's
Rainbow's End thrift shop.
Besides her husband, survivors
include a son, Lyle C. DeWitt of
Oakland,Calif.;two daughters,Gail
D. Kendall of Palos Heights, 111.,
and Debra J. Kies of Barnstable;
seven grandchildren; and 12 great-
grandchildren.
A funeral service was held at Os-
terville United Methodist Church.
Burial was in Hillside Cemetery in
Osterville.

Charles I. Edwards, 85
Centerville - Charles Irving Ed-
wards, 85, died Jan. 14, 2006, at
Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
He was the husband of the late
Madeline (Johnson) Edwards.
Mr. Edwards was born in Med-
ford, educated in Whitman and
graduated from Whitman High
School.AnArmyveteran of World
War II, he served with the 482nd
Bomb Squadron. He received
the World War II Victory Medal,
Asiatic Pacific Ribbon withthree
bronze stars, American Theater
Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal,
Air Medal with three oak-leaf
clusters and the Distinguished
Flying Cross. He served in air
attacks against Japan and was
honorably discharged as a staff
sergeant in 1945.
Mr. Edwards worked for the New
England Telephone Co., retiringas
a supervisor. He was a member of
the Telephone Pioneers.
He lived in Plymouth from the
early 1950s, moving to Centerville
two years ago.
He was an active member of
Christ Church Episcopal in Plym-
outh,where he served on the vestry
committee and sang in the choir.
He was a music enthusiast and
a former drummer with the Bud
Wrightington Trio.
He was a founder of Plymouth
YouthHockey,alongtime hockey
coach, and played pond hockey
until his mid-70s. He was an avid
golfer, an animal lover, and en-
joyed bird-watching and caring
for his horse.
A funeral was held at Christ
Church Episcopal. Burial was in
Chiltonville Cemetery in Plym-
outh.

Elizabeth Ann Griffin
Falmouth - Elizabeth Ann Grif-
fin of Falmouth died Dec. 29 at
Falmouth Hospital after a brief
illness.
Born in Holyoke, she was edu-
cated in local schools and gradu-
ated with honors from MacDuffie
School For Girlsin Springfield. She
enteredWheaton CollegeinNorton
and spent her junior year studying
at the University of Grenoble in
France, earning degrees in French
and in history and grammar.Later,
shegraduated from BostonUniver-
sity with honors.
Ms. Griffin lived and worked in
Boston and Sarasota, Fla., before
comingto CapeCod,where shewas
employed by the Marine Biological
Laboratory inWoodsHole as editor
of its annual report.
Survivors include her parents,
J, Kevin and Nancy F. Griffin of
Centerville; two brothers, James
K. and Daniel P.;and several nieces
and nephews.

Barbara Helen Lane, 80
Dennis - Barbara Helen (Taylor)
Lane,80, died unexpectedly Jan. 18,
2006, in Yarmouthport.
She was the wife of the late John
Marshall Lane.
Mrs. Lane was born in South
Weymouth and educated in Rock-
land and Barnstable. She was a
1943 graduate of Barnstable High
School.
In addition to being a home-
maker, she was a leader in the Girl
Scouts and Cub Scouts program
in South Yarmouthand Dennis for
manyyears. She also served on the
Plymouth Bay Girl Scout Council
board.
Mrs. Lane was an active member
ofthe WestDennisGarden Club and
the Masonic Chapter ofthe Eastern
Star of South Dennis, where she
served as worthy matron in 1979,
1980 and 1987. She also served as
Grand MarthaintheMassachusetts
Grand Chapter Order ofthe Eastern
Star from 1987 to 1989.
Survivors include a son, Wayne A.
Bullock of Plattsburgh, N.Y; four
daughters, Deborah Wilbur of East
Freetown, Rachel Heckendorn of
Hobe Sound, Fla., Rebecca Lane of
West Dennis and Melissa Grenier of
Sarasota, Fla.; eight grandchildren;
and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at
South Yarmouth United Methodist
Church.

Charles E. Meads, Sr., 83
Orleans -Charles E. Meads, Sr.,
83, of Orleans died Jan. 20, 2006, at
Pleasant Bay Rehabilitation and
Nursing Center in Brewster.
He was the husband of Bertha
(Mancini) Meads for more than
60 years.
A lifelong Cape resident, he was
agraduate of Orleans High School,
where he was the pitcher for his
baseball team and played cornet
in the band.
During World War II, he helped
build Liberty ships at the Provi-
dence shipyard in Rhode Island.
He met and married his wife in
Cranston, and they moved to Or-
leans in 1946.
Mr. Meads attended Wentworth
Institute in Boston and became
the lead draftsman for Nickerson
Homes, Inc., in Orleans. He de-
signed and supervised the con-
struction of many residential and
commercial building projects.
He was a dispatcher for the Or-
leans and Eastham police depart-
ments.
Mr.Meads coached Little League
teams in Orleans and was a former
board member of the Cape Cod
Jazz Society. He built and flew
large-scale RC model aircraft and,
until recently, was a dominating
bilhards player.
He enjoyed family vacations on
Campabello Island in Canada.
Besides his wife, survivors in-
clude a son, Charles E. Meads, Jr.,
of Osterville, and many nieces and
nephews. Hewasthe brother ofthe
late Grafton Meads, Ann Meads
Perreault , Ellen Redmond , and
Mary York.
A Mass of Christian Burial was

Angela Helene Williams, 16
Hyannis - Angela Helene Wil-
liams, 16, died Jan. 14, 2006, at
her home after a lifelong illness
with cystic fibrosis.
She was born in Boston, and
was a student at Barnstable High
School, where she enjoyed school
and participated in many activi-
ties. She had many interests and
hobbies, and despite her illness
insisted on trying whatever inter-
ested her, including sports. Her
most recent hobbies were scrap
booking and puzzles.
Survivors include her mother,
Maurine A. (Peters) Williams; a
brother, Craig Williams; her pater-
nal grandmother, Helen Williams
of New York; and many aunts,
uncles and cousins. She was also
the twin sister of Stacia Williams,
who died in 1999.
A funeral was held at Doane,
Beal & Ames Funeral Home in
Hyannis.
