ALL-AMERICAN - Carly Newton
(17) registers a point for the
Barnstable volleyballteam during
the Raiders' Oct. 28 win over
Medway.
The
Barnstable High
School volleyball team
had lost the first game
of the match.
It was Oct. 21 at Case High
School in Swansea. The Raid-
ers were en route to their
third consecutive undefeated ,
state-championship season,
and Carly Newton, for one,
didn't like being behind.
"I'll never forget the first
point of the second game,"
coach Tom Turco said, still
amazed three months later.
"Carly hit a shot off the head
of aback-row player.Youcould
see her take over the match at
that point."
Last week, the Centerville
senior, winner of the Fall 2005
Red Raider Award as the
school's best female athlete
for the season, picked up a
couple more individual ac-
colades.
Prepvolleyball.com named
her a high school Ail-Ameri-
can, the first Massachusetts
player so honored. And she
was named the Gatorade
Massachusetts Player of the
Year, the eighth time in the
past nineyearsthat award has
gone to a BHS player.
When Newton 's mother
called her at a volleyball
tournament to tell her of the
PrepVolleyball.comhonor,she
replied, "I don't know what
that is."
She's still not entirely sure
how the honor came about
-she thinks Turco nominated
her - but she's suitably im-
pressed.
"It's pretty cool," she said.
"It's really exciting."
When it was suggested that
Turco probably nominated
the whole team, she said, "I
wouldn't blame him."
Clearly, she thinks pretty
highly of her teammates
"We worked so hard," she
said. "I don't like singling
myself out at all. Volleyball,
it's a team sport."
"Carly had really good
teammates," confirmed Tur-
co. "Awesome teammates."
A great setter in Gen Moore,
great defensive players,awell
rounded offense.
"She'lltellyou herself,"said
the coach.
Which, of course, she did.
In fact, she talked of being
part of the BHS volleyball
program in almost mystical

a month from today.
The win over Franklin, at
Kennedy Rink in Hyannis by
a 4-0 score Jan. 18, featured a
pair of shorthanded goals by
junior Katie Kirwin and two
tallies by sophomore Stepha-
nie Scarpato. Each assisted on
one of the other's goals.
"They've been together a
couple of years," said coach
Kim Sullivan. "They certainly
gel. They've got great antici-
pation. I think that'sstarting
to show."
Scarpato, last year's South
Eastern Mass. Girls Hockey
League leading scorer, scored
twice more inthe Raiders'4-1
win over Westwood in Canton
three nights later.
"She's really developing
her all-around game," Sulli-
van said. "She's always been
talented offensively and she's
really working hard on devel-
oping her defensive game.
She's developing into one of
the better all-around players
in the state."

Meet the new boss
Turco tabbed to
head BHS boys
volleyball
By David Curran
dcurran@barnstablepatriot.com
SAME AS THE OLD BOSS -
TomTurco,who hascoached
the BHSgirlsvolleyballteam
to nine state titles in his 18
years as head coach, has
been named coach of the
school's new boysprogram,
which starts its first season
April 3.
If the athletes who go
out for Barnstable High
School's new boys vol-
leyball team
want to know
what to
expect from
their coach,
all they have
to do is ask a
player on the
school's girls
volleyball
team.
"My ap-
proach to
coaching ath-
letes, athletes
are athletes,"
said Tom
Turco, who
last Friday
was named
head coach of
the fledgling
program by
BHS Ath-
letic Director
Steve Fran-
cis. "I can't
coach any
other way.
I'm not going to coach any
other way."
Over the past 18years,
Turco has developed the
most successful girls vol-
leyball program in the
state. His teams have
won nine state Division
1championships, includ-
ing the last three in a row.
Those three teams all went
undefeated.
He understands start-
ing a new program willbe
different.
"This is all new,"he said.
"They don't even know the
rules."
So he willteach the
game, and he knows he
won't have a lot of time to
get the team
ready for its
first match.
Tryouts start
March 20,
and open-
ing night is
April 3, at
home against
Wareham. If
tryouts take
three days,
that would
leave seven
school days
before the
start of the
season.
A key will
be for the
players to
keep from
being frus-
trated by
mistakes,
especially
in the early
going, Turco
said.
"They need to be focused
during the first two weeks
of the competitive season,"
he said. "Once they get it,
they'll get it."
Just who "they " will be
remains to be seen. When
