The -rand difficu l ty is, that almost every man who
coO,,5 here h as expected to get a fortune easily and
Zlckly, and retu rn to his loved ones at home. _
?
But few can obt ain a fortune easily, by coming to
California ; some may obtain one quickly .
The con stant toil and app lieati on ,either mental ,or
1 -sical and often both .the absence from friends ,—
Fi i privation of society, the loss of almost all means
f intellectual enjoyment and improvement—the suf-
trin«- when sick , for want of nurses and the kind at-
entiSns found in one's own home, the anxiety winch
the husband and the father must feel while seperat-

Leaving the Mines , let us look at the wages of
mechanics and others. But I would here remark .that
it is probable ,that a proportion of the successful min-
ers are exceeding ly careful about disclosing the
amount of their possessions. Those who are return-
ing home, and who take th ,eir gold dust with them ,
wish to avoid pay ing fi eight on it. The steamers now
take over 300 passengers each ; and the agent inform-
ed me that it was a low estimate to suppose that each
passenger took $1000 upon an average. The last
steamer took $920,000 on frei ght ; so that you will
see that at this rate , this country is exporting month-
ly one and a quarter millions of gold dust at the val-
ue of sixteen dollars per ounce , which is twelve per-
cent , at least , below its value at the mint. But to
return to the subject of wa»i^. - :* ;
Carpenters are now obtaining-- at San Francisco
$12 to $16 per day, and other 1 mecluinics about the
same ; laborers $6 to 87 per day ; 'sailors S120 to
$150 per month ; shi p masters $400 to $50.0 per
month ; cooks, stewards .waiters &u. $120 to 300 dol-
lars per month ; women servants $3 00 per monlh ,
wash women 5 dollars to 6 dollars per dozen , and so
on.
We pay our clerks $250 to $500 per month , and
I suppose that others do the same. Lawyers charge
$25 to $50 for advice , $20 to $25 for making a
Deed, Bill of Sale, Power of Attorney &e.,nnd $100
for some other instruments. Here there is certain-
ly an average of ten dollars per day.
Boston , Jan. 18—Fish—The market is without va-
riation from last week, and may be called dull. No 2
and 3 Mackerel , separate , are inquired after , and will
bring $8 and $6 per bbl. Mackerel in fares $11 62 and
II 7'5 for No 1 ; $7 62 a 7 75 for No 2, and $5 62 and
5 75 for No 3, per bbl. cash.
Flour—There is a good demand and prices have ad-
vanced about 35c per bbl within the week. Sales of
Genesee common brands $5 50 a 5 62 1-2; fancy bran ds
9a .87 1-2 a 6 per bbl , cash. 12 to 1500 bbls Southern ,
part for export , at $5 37 for Fredericksburg lowland ,
and 5 50 for mountain ; and Howard street , and George-
town , $5 44 per bbl , 4 mos. •
Grain—For Corn there is a little more firmness in
the market, hut no material change in prices. Southern
yellow is selling at 57 a 59c as to dry-ness ; white 55 a
56c. Oats are in stead y demand ate46 a 47c for good

Notice to Mariners.
Custom House, New York , )
Collector 's Office, Jan. 12, 1850. j
Lieut Maxwell Woodhull , of the U S Navy, and at-
tached to the Coast survey, has informed me that un-
der his di rectio n, Spar Buoys have been placed upon
Dimon and Princess Reefs, situated npon the Southerl y
point of the Battery and Governor 's Island , as a guide
to the navi gation of the East River. These Buoys will
remain in their present localities until the rocks they
indicate are removed. H. MAXWELL.
Whale ship Ploug hboy, of New Bedford , reported
stranded near Tombez, proved a total loss. 200 gallons
out of 200 bbls of oil saved , part of the provisions , &c.
Capt Phelon has arrived in the U S. Most of the offi-
cers and crew went to California.
Accounts fm Nassau state that the now shi p Revere ,
Fredk Howes, of and fm Boston Dec 13, for Tampa
Bay, with hay on government account , got ashore on
the W part of the Gingerbread Ground , and was obli ged
to discharg e into several wreckers before she could get
off. They afterwards piloted her to theBiminl Islands ,
and rendered all necessary aid to the master , who set-
tl ed their claim for salvage,, by a draft on the owners ,
for $10,000, and proceeded on his voyage. The R was
valued at $48,000, and is insured in Boston for $46,500.
Bark Coquette , of Boston , was undoubtedl y lost in
the typ hoon of Sept 13, and it is feared all on board
perished. A steamer was sent from Hong Kong, but
had been unable to discover a vesti ge of her , and up to
Oct 29 nothing was known of vessel or crew. Vessel
and freight money was insured in Boston for $25,000.
