Betty May Cahill , 80
Osterville-Betty May (Anderson)
Cahill, 80, died Jan. 9, 2006, at her
home.
Shewasthe wife ofHenry "Hank"
Cahill Sr.for 57 years.
Mrs. Cahill was born in Brook-
lyn, N.Y.,and lived in Sherborn for
many years before moving to Cape
Cod in 1979.
She taught music and fine arts
both in a school setting and in pri-
vate sessions for many years.
She was a church soloist for
17 years, a swimming instructor
for many years and an avid sailor.
She also loved sewing, gardening,
knitting, bird-watching, camping
and cooking.
Besides her husband, survivors
include four children, Geoffrey
Cahill of Richmond, Va., Kathleen
Magowan of Osterville, Jennifer
Dark of Peterborough, N.H., and
Henry Cahill Jr. of Pelham, N.H.; a
sister,Barbara Outwater of Stuart,
Fla.; six granddaughters; and sev-
eral nieces and nephews.
She was also the mother of the
late Christopher Cahill.
A memorial service will be held
at a later date.
Florence P. Clements,
104
South Yarmouth - Florence
Pinkerton Clements, 104, of South
Yarmouth died peacefully Jan. 14,
2006, at her home at Thirwood
Place.
She was the wife of the late
George F.Clements, a noted Cape
architect and civil engineer, who
died in 1960.
BorninTyler,Tex.,Mrs.Clements
graduated from Tyler High School
and received abachelor'sdegree in
musicfrom New England Conserva-
tory of Music in Boston, where she
majored in concert piano.
After movingtothe Cape,shewas
activeinanumber of civicorganiza-
tions including the American Red
Cross, Cape Cod Hospital, and the
Barnstable Garden Club.
DuringWorld War II, she helped
organize and run the American
Theater Wing's Cape Cod British
War Relief effort . She was a major
in the Massachusetts' Women's
Defense Corps.
Following the war, she wrote
historical columns about the area
for several weekly Cape Cod pub-
lications.
Mrs. Clements was a communi-
cantof St.Mary'sEpiscopal Church
in Barnstable.
Survivors include two sons,
George Jr. of Greenwich, Ct. and
Chatham and John of Croydon,
N.H.;five grandchildren; and seven
great grandchildren. She was pre-
ceded in death by her brothers
William and Gus Pinkerton, Jr.
A service of Memorial and Re-
membrance willbe held later inthe
spring at the Woodside Cemetery
inYarmouthport.In lieu of flowers,
memorial contributions may be
made to Cape Cod Hospital.
Zigmas Gavenas , 82
Hyannis - Zigmas Gavenas, 82,
died Jan.9, 2006, at his home after
a long illness.
He was the husband of Anele
for 56 years.
Mr. Gavenas was born in Lithu-
ania.
Heworked asadraftsmanbefore
retiring in 1988.
He lived in Hyannis for 14 years
and also lived in Sarnia, Ontario;
East Hartford, Conn.; and Jupiter,
Fla.
Among his hobbies were home
remodeling and travel.
Besideshiswife,survivorsinclude
a son, Algis; and two nieces.1
A funeral Mass was celebrated
at St. Francis Xavier Church in
Hyannis.

Alice A. Hansen, 87
Savannah, Ga.-AliceA. (Brady)
Hansen, 87, of Savannah, Ga.
and formerly of West Yarmouth,
died Jan. 7, 2006, at the Hospice
House.
Shewasthewifeofthelate Ralph
W.Hansen.
Mrs. Hansen was a longtime
employee ofFruitland"Giradinos."
She was a member of the UFCW
International Union.
She lived in West Yarmouth for
50yearsbefore movingto Savannah
several months ago to be cared for
by her family.
Mrs. Hansen wasvicepresident
of the Friends of Christmas. She
loved pets, including her beloved
dog Max, and collecting stamps,
postcards and coins.
An independent woman, she
is remembered for her multiple
talents that included refinishing
furniture.
Survivors include two nieces,
Linda Phillips and Jacqueline
Campbell; three great nieces and
nephews; and four great great
nieces and nephews. She was
preceded in death by her brother,
William J. Brady.
A Mass of Christian Burial was
celebrated at St. Francis Xavier
Church in Hyannis. Burial fol-
lowed inVillage Cemetery inNorth
Easton.

Virginia Rose Houghton,
84
Satellite Beach, Fla. - Virginia
Rose Houghton, 84, died Jan. 13,
2006, at the Clara Barton Hospital
in Hoisington, Kan.
She was the wife of the late
Thomas E. Houghton, who died
in 1970. They were married for 28
years.
Born in Attleboro, Mrs. Hough-
ton worked as a clerk for Phi Beta
Kappa in Washington, D.C., and
was a salesclerk for Puritan Cloth-
ing in Hyannis. She was a former
resident of Springfield,Va., and for
the past 15 years lived in Satellite
Beach, Fla.
Mrs. Houghton wasamember of
The Republican Party of Brevard
County, Fla.
Survivors include one son, Mi-
chael Houghton of Alexandria,
Va.; two daughters, Judith Collier
of Indialantic, Fla., and Karen
Van Brimmer of Hoisington, Kan.;
nine great-grandchildren and four
grandchildren.

Katherine M. Irlen, 41
Centerville - Katherine M.
"Kathy"Irlen,41,died Jan. 10,2006,
at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
Shewasavolunteer at Hospice&
Palliative Care of Cape Cod andthe
Housing Assistance Corp., as well
as apassionate advocate for social
causes,especiallythe homelessand
the disabled.
She was a board member of the
Cape Organization on the Rights
of the Disabled.
Among her interests were col-
lecting crystal prisms and sharing
themwith others,ridinginfast cars
and goingto the movies and Bruce
Springsteen concerts.
She was a member of Cape Cod
Synagogue,whereshelovedattend-
ing events and services.
Survivors include her parents,
Harvey and Barbara Irlen of Cen-
terville; and two brothers, Kevin
and Steve Irlen.
Shiva services were held at the
Irlen home.

Ernest A. Land, 87
Hyannis - Ernest A. Land, 87,
died Jan. 9, 2006, at The Pavilion.
He was the husband of Phyllis
(Ellis) Land.
Mr.Land was born in Hamilton,
Ontario. He moved to Brooklyn,
N.Y.,at the age of3.
A World War II veteran, he
served in the Marines at Quantico,
Va., from 1935 to 1939 and served
in the Navy from 1940 to 1945.
He volunteered for a mission to
the North Pole, where he set up a
weather stationthat assistedinthe
Normandy invasion.
After the war, he was a painter
at Grand Central Galleriesin New
York City.
In the 1960s, he settled in the
Washington area and painted for
NASA at Bailey's Crossroads. He
also restored the Jupiter locomo-
tive for the Smithsonian's bicen-
tennial.
He was art director for USIA
television until 1989.
Mr. Land completed the first
acrylicpaintingusingGrumbacher
materialsand sent the painting on
tour in Europe.
He was elected a lifetime fel-
low by the Royal Society of Art in
London in 1964 and was a member
of American Legion Post 270 in
McLean, Va.
Besides his wife, survivors in-
clude a son, Gerald Land of Fort
Littleton,Pa.;asister,RuthMurphy
of Scott Depot,W.Va.;and a grand-
daughter.
A memorial service was held at
St. Peter's Church in Osterville.
Robert J. LaVallee, 60
Barnstable -Robert J. LaVal-
lee, 66, of Barnstable passed away
peacefully Jan. 14, 2006, at home.
Mr. LaVallee was pastor of
Renewed Life in Jesus Church in
Chester, Vt., for 11 years before
moving to Cape Cod. His life was
deeply rooted in his faith.
A kind and devoted man, his
greatestpassionwasspending time
with his family as a stay-at-home
dad. He loved to watch his chil-
dren play basketball in Chatham,
and was an avid fisherman who
could be found often at Chatham
Lighthouse.
Besideshiswife Diane,survivors
include six children: Donna Wolin
of Berlin, N.H.; Michael LaVallee
of Terryvule, Ct.; and Jesse and
Timothy LaVallee and Julie and
Matthew Solano of Barnstable;
a sister; three brothers; and five
grandchildren.
A memorialservice to celebrate
his life will be held Saturday at
First Light Church of Cape Cod,
195Meetinghouse Road,Route 137,
South Chatham at 4 p.m.

Frank A. Madden Jr., 81
Osterville -FrankA. Madden Jr.,
81, died Jan. 11, 2006, after a long
illness with amyotrophic lateral
sclerosis-primary lateral sclerosis.
He was the husband of Joan
Mayne Madden.
Mr.Madden wasborn inKansas
City,Mo., and served with the 75th
Infantry Division duringWorldWar
II from 1943 to 1945. After induc-
tion to the Army, he was placed
in the Army Specialized Training
Program to study engineering at
Cornell University.
Followingthe war,he graduated
from Georgetown University,where
he was chosen for the nationalhon-
orary fraternity Phi Alpha Theta.
He was also a member of the box-
ing team.
He earned his juris doctorate
degree from New YorkLawSchool,
where he was a member of the
Law Review. He was admitted to
practice law in New York State,
the Eastern and Southern Federal
Districts and before the U.S. Su-
preme Court.
Starting his career as a special
agent for the FBI under J. Edgar
Hoover, Mr. Madden was most
widely noted for his role in the
capture of the Russian spy, Col.
Rudolf Abel.
Afterleavingthe FBI,hebecame
the first chief executive officer
of Homequity in 1963. Two years
later he formed his own company,
Executrans International Corp.,
andacquired the realestate broker-
age firm of Previews International
and the magazine Holiday Homes
International.
In 1976 he sold hisfirm to Sears
Allstate Enterprises, which later
renamed the company Coldwell
Banker Relocation Systems, Inc.
In the real estate relocation in-
dustry,Mr.Madden became alead-
ingauthority andlecturer based on
hislegal background and business
credentials. In 1987, he retired as
president and CEO of ChemExec
Relocation Systems,Inc.,whichhe
founded in 1981.
He served on multipleexecutive
boards and was a trustee of Camp
Sloan of the YMCA. He was also a
member of the Society of Former
Agents of the FBI, the Bar As-
sociation of the City of New York,
Woodway Country Club of Darien,'

Conn., and the WiannoYachtClub
of Osterville.
Aresident ofNewCanaan,Conn., :
since the early '60s, he spent the .

majority of his later years at the
family summerhome in Osterville.
He was an avid yachtsman.
This past October he was hon-
ored at the annualCape Cod Seaof
Hopebenefit inChathamtocombat
Lou Gehrig's disease.
Besides his wife, survivors in-
clude two daughters, Deborah Pa-
naiotopoulos and PamelaRandon,
bothofNew Canaan;ason,Stephen
Madden of Weston; a sister, Helen
Maloney of Loudonville, N.Y.; and
six grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated
at Our Lady Of Victory Church
in Centerville. Burial followed in
Massachusetts NationalCemetery
in Bourne.

Weston - John J. O'Connor, 82,

He was the husband of the late
Evelyn G. (Mahoney) O'Connor.
They were married 51years.
Mr. O'Connor was born in-
Waltham and graduated from Bel-
mont HighSchool.He servedinthe
Navy during World War II.
He worked in the automobile
industry for many years and was
the former owner of Belmont Ford.
He also owned Mr. Rent-a-Car in
Hyannis for many years.
HelivedinWestonfor manyyears
before movingtoDennisport,where
he livedfor 18years.Ten yearsago,
he moved back to Weston.He also
winteredin St.Petersburg, Fla.He
was amember of the Belmont and
Hyannis Rotary clubs.
