BHS boys track tied for league lead
Raiders' alert-
ness clinches
narrow win over
Taunton
By David Curran
dcurran@barnstablepatriot.com
Barnstable's4x400-meter
relay team was paying at-
tention. Taunton's wasn't.
That wasthe difference in
the BHS boys track team's
51-48 win over Taunton at
the Reggie Lewis Track
& Athletic Center in Rox-
bury last Friday, a win that
moved the Raiders into a
three-way tie for first place
in the Old Colony League
goinginto theleaguecham-
pionship meet two weeks
from Monday at the same
venue.
Barnstable had the win
within reach going into
the meet'slast two events,
the 4x200-meter relay and
the 4x400-meter relay, but
needed tofinishfirstinboth
to claim victory.
The first quartet -senior
Mike Burke and juniors
Brian Turnbull , James
Canon and Nick Cantella
-did their part, winning in
1 minute, 36.9 seconds, just
three-tenths of a second off
the school record they tied
earlier in the season.
Ordinarily, the next race
would be the girls4x200 relay,
but instead,the officials called
for the boys 4x400.
"For some reason , the
Taunton 4x400 teams were
away from everybody else's'"
said BHS coach Justin Mess-
ier, and were unable to get
in position to start the race
according to the rules. Once
itwasclearTauntonhad com-
mitted a foul, Messier told
his foursome - seniors Jason
Lyon, Nathan Roberts, Mike
Rubino and GregKarukas-to
take it easy and be sure not
to foul. They didn't, finishing
in 3:58.8.
Messier had to protest the
event for Barnstable to get
the points.
"It was on (Taunton) to be
ready to go," said the coach,
adding, "I don't think it's a
good way to win, but I have
to look out for my kids."
Of course, Lyon, Roberts,
Rubino and Karukas are a
talented group andmighthave
won the race anyway. Their
timecertainlywouldhavebeen
betterhadtheynotmadeafoul-
free race their top priority.
The Raiders had a raft of
personal bests en route to
being in position to take the
meet withwinsin the last two
relays.Messier named Canon
the meet MVP, asmuch for his
performances over the course
of the season as for what he
did that day.
"Every meet he seems to
have had a personal best,
just continued improvement
throughout the season,"said
the coach.
In addition running in the
4x200, Canon set a personal
best in the 55 meters - 7.23
seconds - though he didn't
place. Burke took first in 7.02
seconds, and Turnbull was
second in 7.05 seconds. Ju-
niors Ryan Stewart and Ryan
Cremeans also set personal
bests in the event.
Canon collected the third-
place point with a35-foot-1.5-
inch shot put. Junior Ross
Hickey won the event with
a personal-best 36-foot-8.25-
inch toss.
Cantella was a double win-
ner in individual events, tak-
ing the 300-meters in a per-
sonal-best 38.8 seconds and
qualifying to compete in the
state championship meet
in the process. He also won
the long jump with another
personal best, 19-feet-1.75-
inches.
Burke took second in the
long jump with a personal-
best 18-feet-10.5-inches, and
junior Martin Zampa took
third in the 300 meters in 39.4
seconds.
Lyonhad the Raiders'other
first-place finish,winningthe
mile in 4:41.5. Karukas was
third in 4:54.4
Lyon was second in the
high jump with a 5-foot-3-
inch leap.
Rubino had apersonal best
of 1:39.9 to take second in the
600meters,andfreshmanAlex
Crosby also had a personal
best, 2:00.1, though he didn't
place.
JuniorMichaelBlaschetook
third in the 55-meter hurdles
in 11.52 seconds.
"I thought Blasche did very
well,"Messier said."Hefell but
he still got up and finished.
It gave us another point. It
shows not to quit, to follow
through, because you never
know what will happen."
The coach was impressed
with his squad's dedication
on a day when it seemed like
almost no one was at 100
percent.
"Most of the guys seemed
sick," he said, "and they still
competed as hard as they
could,pushingthemselves for
everybody else."
BHS girls track seeing successes
Ten-member team
not deep enough
to win meets
By David Curran
dcurran@barnstablepatriot.com
The BHS girls track team finished its
dual-meet seasonwinlesslastFriday,fall-
ingto Taunton 65-20 at the Reggie Lewis
Track and Athletic Center in Roxbury.
But with onlyten members,it'sessen-
tially impossible to win a dual meet.
"We did well this year with the num-
ber of kids we have," said coach Justin
Messier.
SeniorsMelissa Doherty and Meaghen
Doherty finished first and second in the
shot put, Melissa with a toss of 32-feet-
4.5-inchesandMeaghen with apersonal-
best throw of 31-feet-ll-inches.
Messier saidMeaghenhasbeen "push-
ing herself to do very well."
Sophomore Leah Tracy took second
in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of
12.41 seconds.
Messiersaid Tracyisinherfirst season
onthe trackteam and hastried anumber
of events, staying determined despite
being frustrated in several of them. Now
he thinks she may have found her niche
in the hurdles.
"Hopefully she'll keep improving in
that,"he said.
Junior Chelsea Leroux was second in
the mile in 5 minutes, 45.7 seconds.
And senior Lana Tanous maintained
her record of almost otherworldly con-
sistency in the 55-meters, taking third
with the familiar time of 8.65 seconds.
Tanous has been so consistent her time
has been identical, to the hundredth of
asecond,in all three Old Colony League
meets.
"I've never seen someone that consis-
tent,"Messier said.
