TOWNNOTES:
PAUL GAUVIN PHOTO
FREEZE FRAME - Heavy equipment operators worked the clear but
frigid weather on Monday, Martin Luther King Day, clearing the lot
at Sea and South streets, Hyannis, where a gasoline station is being
transformed into a women's fashion store. Next door to that lot, Dunkin
Donuts was closed for remodeling and renovations.
Sewer workshop
Jan. 26
A town council workshop
on wastewater disposal and
sewer expansion plan is
scheduled for Thursday.
The workshop is expected
to raise all of the issues and
challenges facing the town's
sewer expansiongoals,which
includes sewering around
Wequaquet Lake and por-
tions of South Hyannis.
The town is proceeding
with its application to uti-
lize the 26-acre McManus
property on Route 132 as
a wastewater disposal site
for upwards of 1.6 million
gallons a day. The final state
sign-off for that application
was expected this week, put-
ting the project in line to be
included with the work in
the upcoming widening and
reconstruction of Route 132,
scheduled to beginasearlyas
this spring.
A majority of the McManus
property was acquired with
land bank funds, though a
portion was paid for with
sewer reserve funds. The dis-
charge project would utilize
the entire 26-acre site, which
raised questions about the
appropriateness of the use.
What's clear is that before
the town can expand sewer
into other areas of town, a
new discharge area willneed
to be found.
The Jan.26 meetingbegins
at 7 p.m. in the town council
chambers of town hall.
New assessor named
Barnstable's new man on
property valueswillbe Jeffrey

pointment at this week's
meeting.
Paul Matheson, Barnsta-
ble'sassessingdirector since
2002, announced in the fall
that he planned a February
retirement.
