GENERALANNOUNCEMENTS: The Center-
ville Staff has been developing a consistent
approach to writing. During the upcoming
in-service day, they will be busy diving into
new and excitingwaystoinstruct children in
writing. They will be attending a workshop
given, at the school, by "The Empowering
Writers" consultants of Connecticut.
SPECIAL EVENTS: The Centerville PTO
had scheduled monthly "family night out"
fundraisers throughout the year. UNO's
Chicago Grille in Hyannis will host us on
Jan.12,and our school willreceive 20 percent
of the sales generated from our families
and friends with a Centerville Elementary
School flyer (to be sent home). We hope to
see you all there!
RECOGNITION: Centerville Elementary's
renewed emphasis on Character Develop-
ment was "tipped off" last week by an as-
sembly lead by two members of the Harlem
RocketsBasketballTeam.They emphasized
team work, respect and the value of educa-
tion while they engaged both the students
and faculty in some humorous basketball
antics. The school will continue emphasis
on these topics throughout the rest of the
year.Thank you to the Harlem Rockets for
spending the time with us!

VOLUNTEER HOURS: We continue to be
grateful to the volunteer hours our com-
munity members put in at Hyannis West.
DuringDecember,which was ashort month
because of the holiday vacation, we still
logged 382 hours of service. This brings
our year to date total to 1711 hours. This
is another vital part of the success of our
school.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS: Cotuit
Elementary student Maggie Fetscher
was honored recently by the Falmouth
Historical
Society for
her research
project
on the life
of Kath-
erine Lee
Bates. As a
third grade
student in
Mrs. Sandy
Maloy's
class, Maggie
prepared a
report. Her
presentation
of it, while
she was
dressed as
the famous author of "America The Beau-
tiful," was videotaped and sent to the
Historical Society. The society recently
informed Maggie that the tape will be ar-
chived in its museum and will be viewed
by other young students who visit there.
SPECIAL EVENTS: Staff and students of
both Cotuit and Marstons Mills campus-
es have given generously for the school's
annual holiday baskets project. With the
help of the Fire Departments of Cotuit
and Marstons Mills, these baskets have
been presented to needy families each
year at Thanksgiving and Christmas. The
members of the Cape Cod Realtors As-
sociation donated over one thousand dol-
lars in gift certificates that were included
in the baskets this year.
PTO MEETING: A PTO Meeting will be
held on Jan.,18 at 7 p.m. in the Marstons
Mills School Cafe. The main topic for this
meeting is the plans for a new playgound
at the Marstons Mills campus. Parents
are urged to attend this meeting and to
determine the role of the PTO in this
project. Children will be welcome.

STUDENTS: On Friday, Jan. 27, during all
the lunches in the Main Cafe the Director
of Food Services and The Teen Clinic will
be sponsoring "Meet the Nutritionist".
Students will have the opportunity to
meet Pat Vasconcellos the school's nu-
tritionist to ask any questions concern-
ing diet, nutrition, and sports nutrition.
There will be informational pamphlets
available as well.
