NAACP sets MLK events Michael Van Leesten, director of public affairs for the Mashantucket Pequot Indian tribe, will speak at the NAACP's celeration of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Federated Church of Hyannis on Main street. The service will be preceded by a community march that will step off at 2 p.m. from the South Street parking lot next to town hall and end at the church. y Zion Union to host MLK observance Attorney Deval Patrick, former U.S. assistant attorney general for civil rights, will speak Sunday at 7 p.m. at Zion Union Church on North Street in Hyannis. The candi- date for governor will help mark the anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birth as part of a worship service hosted by The Black Ministerial Alliance of South- eastern Massachusetts. As a young child, Patrick heard King speak in a park on Chicago's South Side. y Hebrew classes open to Jewish community The Cape Cod Synagogue is offering free classes in basic He- brew as part of the continent-wide campaign, Read Hebrew America, Wednesday evenings beginning Jan. 18 at 6:30. The course being offered at the synagogue, 145 Win- ter St. in Hyannis, is the Hebrew Reading Crash Course Level II. For registration, call 508-775-2988 or 800-44-HEBRE(W). ? Meditation offered for beginners The Cape Sangha, a Zen Buddhist meditation group, meets Sundays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Old Schoolhouse on Route 6A in Barnstable Village. All are welcome, and basic instruction in meditation is offered to beginners. ? Zen Center presents weekly meditation The Cape Cod Zen Center has weekly meditation practice at the Unitarian Church of Barnstable, Barnstable Village on Route 6A. The Tuesday morning group meets at 8 for meditation in the RE area downstairs. There is meditation instruction on Fridays at 6:40 p.m. in the library and a Friday Evening Group meets in the library, behind the sanctuary, at 7 p.m. for medita- tion.
