The current location is
cramped, said Savini.Though
there is enough room for the
inventory, during busy times
it can be difficult to fit all the
customers comfortably.
BoardingHouseisnostrang-
er to cramped quarters.Before
moving to its location of nine
years at 302 Main Street ,
the surf shop was located in
an even smaller storefront
on Barnstable Road for two
years.
The new store, which in-
cludes a basement and office
space, willtriple the room that
Savinihas to sell his boarding
equipment to Main Street
patrons.
"There willbe room to grow
as well as room to merchan-
dise better," Savini said.
Cynthia Cole , executive
director of the Hyannis Main
Street Business Improvement
District (Hyannis Mam Street
BID), said that the move to
the former Nantucket Trading
Co. location worked well for
the Boarding House.
Due to the wood floors ,larg-
er storefront, and amount of
space, the new location , "was
a perfect match," she said.
Boarding House 's move to
a location closer to the more
heavily trafficked part of Main
Street comes in the wake of
a steadily growing customer
base.
"We're still going strong,"
said Buck Squibb, a Boarding
House employee.
Both Saviniand Cole believe
that the new address will
not only increase space, but
increase the already growing
customer base as well.
Savini said that the area
Boarding House will move
to is, "really the beginning of
Main Street."
Because most Main Street
events begin at Barnstable
Road, Boarding House's cur-
rent location isusuallynot in-
cluded if there are roadblocks,
he said.
Traditionally, said Cole ,
businesses west of Barn-
stable Road are busier than
those on the opposite side.
And , because most busi-
nesses prosper, there is a low
turnover and vacancy rate.
Along with a new view of
Main Street and a bigger
floor space, the new location
of Boarding House will bring
new challenges.
Though Savinisaid he faces
little opposition at his current
location , Boarding House 's
new location will likely step
up the concerns some citizens
have about Boarding House's
customers.
Because his customer base
is wide, ranging in age from
kids of eight to adults of 35,
Savini sees mostly young
people.
"We're dealing with kids,"
Savini said. "People think
they 're little punks... a bunch
of trouble. "
Not true , said Savini.
Though many of his custom-
ers are young, he said he has
never had any trouble with
them.
Despite small problems,
Savinibelieves that Boarding
House's move will not only
benefit his customers, but
other Main Street businesses
as well.
Cole, whose organization
deals with the beautification
and improvement of Hyannis'
historic Main Street , also
thinks Boarding House is an
asset to others.
"The most important thing
is for Main Street "to be clean
and beautiful ," Cole said.
Along with help from the
state and town,HyannisMain
Street BID works to plant
flowers, pick up litter, and
create an overall atmosphere
for the area.
Though there is,"somewhat
of a standardized look," to
Main Street, she said, each
store is allowed freedoms
regarding what they put in
their storefronts.
And Boarding House never
disappoints. According to
Cole, "they have agreat store-
front. ..niceflowers. Theywork
at their windows and their
look."
"It's about business and
we bring business to Main
Street ," said Savini.
Though Boarding House is
drastically differentfrom most
other businesses on Main
Street, Cole thinks it will be
a good addition.
"It willbe fun to have an en-
ergetic young business move
in," she said. "The more Main
Street can offer consumers
and patrons, the better."
