STRAIGHT AS AN ARROW - Laura Kozma of the BHS girls swim team dives into the
pool to swim the third leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay during last Friday's meet
against Nantucket at YMCA Cape Cod in West Barnstable. Kozma and teammates
Courtney Greer, Arisa Taylor and Sam Miskiv finished second in the race, helping
the Raiders to a 96-73 win.

96-73decision over Nantucket
at YMCA Cape Cod in West
Barnstable.
The quartetcapped the day
by winning the last race of
the meet, 400-yard freestyle
relay, by a scant 2/100 of a
second. The Raiders didn't
need the win to clinch the
meet, but they would have
had Nantucket's swimmers
not been disqualified in the
500-yard freestyle - without
the disqualification ,the meet
would have been tied going
into the final race - and even
so, it was a thrilling finish to
what had been atight contest
throughout.
"It was unbelievable," said
coach Sarah Newcomb.
The foursome also won the
first race of the meet, the
200-yard medley relay, ac-
counting for 16 points in the
two relays.
Each of the Ostrander sis-
ters -Kellyisajunior, Casey a

eventsto contribute 12points
apiece,whileBaldini,asopho-
more, won the 500-yard free-
style and was second in the
200-yard individual medley,
adding 10pointsto the cause.
Stone, a junior, was second
in the 200-yard freestyle and
the 100-yard butterfly, scoring
eight points.
But the Raiders didn't win
on the backs of those four
alone. Some 17swimmers got
into the scoring column for
Barnstable,including allfour
captains - seniors Courtney
Greer and Caitlin Miller join
the Stone and the elder Os-
trander in servingthe team in
that capacity -and so did the
threesome Newcomb called
the squad's"core stroke swim-
mers:" Greer in the butterfly,
senior Ally Taylor in the back-
stroke and junior SamMiskiv
in the breaststroke.
The Raiders girls are a sea-
soned squad -they have only
three seniors, but 14 juniors
- with several members who
compete in U.S. Swimming
events as members of the
Cape Cod Swim Club based
in Buzzards Bay or the Cape
Cod Mako swim team based
in West Barnstable
"We do have a lot of return-
ingswimmers,whichisgreat,"
Newcomb said.
The team's younger mem-
bers made their presence felt
against Nantucket as well,
with sophomore s Laura Koz-
maand LizzyWarehamjoining
Baldini and Casey Ostrander
in among the scorers.
"They have come along
tremendously,"the coach said
of her charges. "They're really
coming together as a team,
which is good."
Miskiv, Kozma and junior
Nicole Boudreau each scored
five pointsinindividualevents

second in the 500-yard free-
style and fifth in the 100-yard
breaststroke, while Kozma
was third in the 100-yard
backstroke and fourth in
the 200-yard freestyle , and
Boudreau was third in the
200-yard freestyle and fourth
in the 100-yard freestyle.
Miller, Greer, Wareham and
junior Kaitlynn Greene each
added three points in indi-
vidual events. Millerwasthird
in the 100-yard breaststroke ,
Greene was third
in the 500-yard
freestyle , Greer
was fourth in the
100-yard butter-
fly and fifth in
the 200-yard in-
dividual medley,
and Warehamwas
fourth in the 50-
yard freestyle and
fifth in the 100-
yard freestyle.
Taylor added a
solo point with a
fifth-place finish
in the 100-yard
backstroke,junior
Arisa Emanuel-
son scored apoint
by finishing fifth
in the 100-yard
butterfly, and ju-
nior Ginny Ser-
rano contributed
a point with her
fifth-place finish
inthe 50-yardfree-
style.
Miskiv and Kozma also
joined with Greer and Taylor
to take second in the 200-yard
freestyle relay, and Miller and
Taylor hooked up with Ware-
ham and junior Katherine
Nicolas to take third in the
200-yard medley relay.
Newcomb emphasized that
even the swimmers who don't
score in any particular meet
are valuable members of the
team.
"Overall, with everybody on
the team,they allput in some-
thing," she said. "Everybody
swims every single meet, and
they all know they all count
towards everything."

DEEPBREATHING-Wes Duchesney of the BHS
boys swim team takes in a breath of air on his
way to a personal best and a second place
finish in the 100-yard butterfly at last Friday's
meet against Nantucket at YMCA,Cape Cod in
West Barnstable.
They may be few innumber
and short on experience , but
they're no less serious about
their endeavor.
With just 13 members, and
only four returnees from last
year,the BHSboysswimteam
has other objectives besides
winning meets.
"Theyworkhard,"saidcoach
Sarah Newcomb."They're at
practice every day, and every
single day they're gettingbet-
ter. Every single day."
The returnees are juniors
Joel Bonina, Povilas Mitchell
and Matt Ryan and sopho-
more Tim McGrath. All serve
as captains.
Of the other nine, "Maybe
one has a little bit of a swim-
mingbackground,"Newcomb
said, "but everyone else is
brand new to the team.
"They 're defi-
nitely holding
their own," she
added.
And they're be-
coming a team ,
in and out of the
pool. The cama-
raderie was easy
to see during the
Raiders'92-67 loss
to Nantucket at
YMCA Cape Cod
inWestBarnstable
last Friday, as the
swimmers ven-
tured in ones and
twos from their
bench along the
side of the pool the
end of the swim-
ming lanes to ex-
hort teammates
on the BHS girls and boys
teams as they made their
turns for the next lap.
"They 're all great friends.
They all drive together to
practice ," Newcomb said ,
later adding, ""They're defi-
nitely all looking out for each
other, which is nice."
In the pool, their teamwork
in relays is improving, said
the coach.
*
"They're definitely getting
better at working together,"
she said.
McGrath is the best swim-
mer on the team, Newcomb
said, and he showed it in
scoring 10 solo points against
Nantucket. He won the 100-
yard backstroke - the team's
strength, according to New-
comb -and finished second in

THE CAPTAINS-Meg Kilmurray (left) and Marissa
Jones are the captains of Barnstable High School's
undefeated girls gymnastics team.
GETTINGREADY -Marissa Jones warms up onthe
balance beam prior to the BHS girls gymnastics
team's tri-meet win over Nantucket and Plymouth
South.
Melissa Bowe set a school record on the
parallel bars and Allison Szatek won the
vault and the floor exercise to help lead the
BHS gymnastics team to dominating wins
over Plymouth South and Nantucket in its
home opener at Gymport in West Yarmouth
Saturday.
The Raiders took four of the top five spots
in all four events, amassing 141.05 points in
their second meet of the year, better even
than the 138- to 139-point range coach
Duncan Chase had said a week earlier he
was looking for the team to build up to over
the course of the season. Plymouth South
finished with 119points, and Nantucket had
96.65 as Barnstable raised its record to 3-0.
"The juniors and seniors were rock solid,"
Chase said. "They did great."
The team'sfreshmen continued to show a
bit of nervousness,he said, even though two
contributed to the scoring.
"I think once they start sticking their first
couple of routines," said the coach, "they'll
start hitting a little bit better."
OnlyPlymouth South'sSamantha George,
who won the balance beam and finished sec-
ond on the bars, third on the floor and fourth
on the vault, kept Barnstable from sweeping
the top four spots in all four events.
Szatek, ajunior, had the best day overall,
scoring 36.75 points, winning the floor with
a 9.5 and the vault with a 9.1, and taking
second on the beam with a 9.05 and third
on the bars with a 9.1.
Bowe, also a junior, was almost as good,
collecting36.45points with her school-record
9.5 to win on the bars, 9.35 on the floor and
8.9 on the vault, both good for second place,
and 8.7 to finish fourth on the beam.
The Raiders showed their depth in the
meet, with seven gymnasts contributing to
the scoring. Senior captain Meg Kilmurray
accounted for 26 points with fourth place
finisheson the beam (8.8 point) and the floor
(8.7) and afifth place finish on the bars (8.5).
Her fellow senior captain, Marissa Jones,
scored 17.3 points, taking fourth on the bars
(9.0) and fifth on the beam (8.3).
Freshmen Kellyanne Palma contributed
8.2points with her fourth-piace finish on the
vault, and classmate Shelby Couture had 8.55
points in finishing fifth on the floor.
Junior Jordan Robinson added 7.8 points
with her fifth-place finish on the vault.
"Stephanie Saunders and Jordan Robinson
did a great job on vault today," Chase said.
Barnstable alsoshowed its overall superior-
ityasgymnasts, evento the untutored eye.The
Raiders'performanceswere more self-assured
and refined, their leaps and tumbling more
athletic , the
details of their
set positions
on the floor
and the beam
more precise,
and their
movements
smoother and
more graceful,
than those of
their oppo-
nents. Only
George, whose total of 35.7 points was third
overall, could compare.
Season Dedicated to Kelly's Memory
The Raiders are dedicating the 2005-06 sea-
son to longtime assistant coach Sheila Kelly,
who died of ovarian cancer last summer.
Kelly coached countless gymnasts at
Gymport from early childhood , "for like our
whole lives," Kilmurray said.
The team'suniforms bear a circular patch
on one sleeve featuring the initials "SK" in
Raider red superimposed over a teal ribbon,
the symbol for ovarian cancer awareness.
"She's going to be sorely missed," said
BHS Athletic Director Steve Francis, "not
just as a varsity coach but as a friend, a
parent. She and Duncan together taught
these kids gymnastics from just after most
of them started walking. She imprinted work
ethic, discipline , and has changed kids'
lives forever.
"She was the toughest person I've ever
