Perry joins
corrections advisors
State Rep. Jeff Perry will
serve on the Department of
Corrections AdvisoryCouncil,
whichwasestablished by Gov.
Mitt Romney in 2004.
According to arelease from
Perry'soffice, the council wiU
help bringabout changesrec-
ommended by the Governor's
Commission on Corrections
Reform. These include en-
hanced accountability for
managers,staff,and inmates.
The advisory council is also
looking at reforms regarding
health and mentalhealthser-
vices for inmates and special
issues of female inmates.
"While we need to provide
services and rehabilitation to
prisoners, our primarygoalis
to protect the public," Perry,
a former police officer, stated
in a press release.
Emergency aid
coming from FEMA
Major Donna Hansen of the
Salvation Army is the local
contact for human services
agencies wanting a slice of
$114,256infederal emergency
food and shelter funds from
the Federal Emergency Man-
agement Agency. She can be

The deadline for applica-
tions is Jan.25.
The award was announced
by U.S. Rep. Bill Delahunt.

it to get the lay of the land.
"Thirty years ago, there was an open
field,"he said."There'salot of oiltanks
back there. It's really a messy site/'
Town on guard to secure Armory...
Volunteersneeded
for response to
health emergencies
With the potential need for
mass vaccinations or treat-
ments in public health emer-
gencies, the county health
and environment department
has organized an emergency
dispensing sites education
day at Cape Cod Community
College Jan. 21.
With continuous,repeating
sessionsfrom 9a.m.to 4p.m.,
the goalistoinform and train
citizen volunteers who could
be called when needed.

Federal funds boost
options for homeless
Housing Assistance Cor-
poration in Hyannis has
received $154,854 in federal
funds to acquire property
for Kit Anderson House II,
which will provide perma-
nent housing for chronically
homeless people. The effort
will be backed with clinical
support and case manage-
ment services by the Duffy
Health Center.
The money is part of a
$1,149,981 award from the
U.S. Department of Housing
and Urban Development to
the Leadership Council to
End Homelessness on Cape
Cod and the Islands. Finan-
cial support was provided
also to the original Kit An-
derson House, to CHAMP
Homes I and II, and to Legal
Services of Cape Cod.
Also benefiting were Shel-
ter Plus Care programs foi
homeless disabled citizens
and the Homeless Manage-
ment Information System,
whichcoordinates client care
and community homeless-
ness data.
Banishing mercury
Cape Codders eliminated
more than 100 pounds ol
mercury by turning in more
than 2,400 household devices
thedangerouselement.Inthe
town of Barnstable,400ther-
mometers, 101 thermostats
40 switches,three blood pres-
sure gauges and four pounds
of elemental mercury were
turned in for a total of seven
