Continuedf rom Page i well as tlie feast of the Lights, re- ferring tn the tradition that lights appeared on the river at the time of the baptism of Jesus. In Germany it is known as the festival of tho Throe Holy Kings. In Russia , before the overthrow of the Tsars the day was observed witli great pomp and ceremony, marked by the blessing of tlie rivers by the priests of the Eastern Church and the bathing of the people in tlie waters, regardless of tlie temperature . In the hope they would be kept free from dis- ase or be healed fro m whatever dis- ease they may have suffered from ; at the time. Epiphany Eve is a rustic festival in England, observed in order to obtain a blessing on the crops Of the coming year. January Otli was kept as tlie an- niversary or tlie physical birth of Jesus as early as the fourth cen- tury, it was not until the Bishop of Rome, upon tbe request of the Bishop of Jerusalem , investigated the archives of the Jews, taken to Rome after tlie destruction of Jeru- salem , that the real date of Christ 's birth was determined and set on December 25th. The visit of the Magi, or Wise Men , has received chief attention in the observance of the day In the Western Church since the fourth century, as the event has come to be regarded as the manifestation of the divine purpose to extend the benefits of the gospel to the (ientile world as well as to the Jews. Hence , the emphasis of the Churc h on the Day of Epiphany Is on the World Mission of the Christian Church. There grew up a body of legends concerning these wise men , each version adding a little to the last till the men became the Three KI IIKS of Cologne. Names were given In them ami one was called Caspar or .laspur . King nf Tarsus , the land of myrrh; another was called Mi'lchlor , King of Arabia , rich in gold; ami the third wus called Dalthasar, King oi' Saba, or Slielia, where frankincense flowed from the trees. According t" tradition, when they reached their own countries they resigned their high offices, distributed their goods to the poor and went about preaching the gos- pel of the Prince ol Peace, st Thomas, when travel ing in Imliii rorty years Inter , is said to have found the Three Wise Men and baptized them and ordained them as priests. They suffered martyr- dom for tlielr faith and wore burled together Empress Helena found what she was convinced were their bones and carried them to Gon> stantinople and put them In the Church of St. Sophia. At the lime of the first Crusade the bones were rescued and taken to Milan , und Barbarossa, when he captured Mi- lan , took possession of them and laid them in the cathedral at Co- logne. They now rest there In n golden shrine decorated with pre- clous gems. One of tno most interestin g leg- ends connected with the Eve ol Epiphany, Is that whon the three Wise Men of the East were on their way to Bethlehem from Jerusalem they passed an old woman who was cleaning her house. She usked tlinni where they were going and when they told her , she asked them to wait until she had finished her work and sho would go Willi them. They replied that t hoy could not wait and advised her to follow them. When sho had finished her work , she started , hut they were out or sight , und ever since that day she has been wandering about the world seeking tho Child Jesus. According to the folklore ol Russia and Italy she goes down the chim- neys of bouses leaving gifts ror the children in imitation of the gifts of the Wise Men, in the hope that at last she might llnd the Child Jesus. Some children have faith in ber as others have in Santa Clans , and gifts are exchanged on tills day as others do at Christmas. Christmas greens primitive man believed Inhabited by spirits , be- cause objects ol nature. Bringing them in at tlie beginning of the Advent season was the way of bringing spirits Into the home , and disposing of them meant re- leasing the spirits at the end of the Advent season. For us, it Is a day of asking Cod's blessing on us . and a dignified way of getting rid of our greens.
