The Wedding Crashers (R) By John Walker arts@barnstablepatriot.com The Wedding Crashers is the first film in a long time to get me excited about its release on DVD. It is one of the best movies to come out in 2005 and one of the best comedies to come out in quite a while. The Wedding Crashers earned a place on my elite list all time favorite comedies, which include This Is Spinal Tap, Stripes , Slap Shot ,Animal House and, of course, Caddy shack. It is a throw back to the days when filmmakers cared less about playing to the junior high school crowd and more to adults. Though the film can be crude and rude it is still packed with enough heart and enough smarts to make it enjoyable to all but the prudest of prudes It greatly benefits from having two of the funniest motor mouths working in Hollywood today. Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are hilarious when they are by themselves. Together they are a comedicforce to bereckoned with. The chemistry between the two stars is reminiscent of the chem- istry between Robert Redford and Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid. Vaughn is the real standout in the film. He perfected the role he has played in Old School , Made and Dodgeball as a quick-talking slacker wise guy. The two play divorce mediators, Jeremy (Vaughn) and John (Wil- son), who spend their weekends crashing weddings. Like skilled predators, the two men go from wedding to wedding changing eth- nic backgrounds and using every trick from their arsenal to bed as many bridesmaids as possible. The two men have every angle of the crash worked out right down to fake purple heartsfor the recep- tions with cash bars and an ever- changing resume of professions from the French ForeignLegionto the CEO's of an emerging maple syrup conglomerate. The opening montage shows the two going through a series of weddings and sets a high energy level for the film. The opening is such a great time, it makes you wish that they 'd crash your wedding. To end the wedding season on a high note the two decide to crash the social wedding of the year: the wedding of treasury secretary William Cleary 's (Christopher Walken) daughter. They successfully gain entrance and are soon running through their litany of tricks and ruses to get the women they want. Before you know it, John has fallen in love with the secretary's middle daughter Claire. The two are next invited to the family's beach home, where Jer- emy endures a series of hilarious abuses at the hands of various family members while John con- tinues to work on getting Claire to fall for him. The last third of the film con- tains some of the funniest bits as well as one of the best cameos in a film that I have ever seen. The Wedding Crashers can be crude , yet it maintains a sweet- ness that keeps it a love story at heart. The DVD comes with the option to watch either the theatrical version or the uncorked version that has added scenes not in the original film. Either version is funny, though the theatrical ver- sion runs slightly smoother. The film also has some of the best and funniest deleted scenes since This Is Spinal Tap . The scene where the two sing "99 Red Balloons" is absolutely hilarious. Wedding Crashers is one of those rare films that will have you laughingand keep you entertained throughout the entire film. It is rarer still in the fact that you will have such a good time watching it that you'll want to see it again. Library Pick: Mr And Mrs Smith Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie star in this action/comedy about a handsome married couple living in a beautiful suburban home who fight over such mundane things as curtains for the living room. The couple grows bored with their married life and go to a marriage counselor. They express their mutual disinterest in each other stating that they are just like every other married couple , but there is one major difference both Mr. and Mrs. Smith are elite assassins. Their marriage heats up how- ever when they discover their partners true identity and are forced to carry out a contract on each other. The film crackles with excellent performances by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and boasts some superb dialogue and a supporting role by Vince Vaughn. The film gained notoriety for the off-screen chemistry between stars Jolie and Pitt. The film is enjoyable albeit somewhat predictable. Mr And Mrs Smith is available at the Cotuit Public Library. Need proof that the Hanna-Barbera '60s clas- sic - the first animated program to air in primetime -has earned a rock-hard place in history? Then dig in ... just the way Dino would! This season celebrates the introduction of Bamm-Bamm; abandoned on the doorstep of Betty and Barney Rubble, the little tyke not only captured Pebble 's teeny heart but proved to have, shall we say, quite the hard-hitting impact. Best of all, the season'sfirst episode features Ann-Margrock -it's a sassy trib- ute to Ann-Margret (then hotter than a kitten with a whip) and the real A-M provided the voice. No wonder bedrock (s) ! The Lenny Bruce Perf or- mance Film (Koch Vision) George Carlin says it best: Bruce'sgenius'wasthe unique abilityto investigatehypocrisy and expose social inequities in a street rap that was really a form of poetry. In this -the only complete stand-up perfor- mance of Bruce ever captured on film - the iconoclast poet speaks. Loudly.Filmed in 1965 at SanFrancisco'sBasin Street West (in what would be his penultimate live appearance), the show consists of Bruce's responses to the accusations and allegations stemming from his multiple arrests for obscenity and the trials that followed. While the production values are far from superior, it is an important piece of history for humorists and historians to embrace. Adventures of Superman: The Complete Second Season (Warner Home Video) Faster than a speeding bullet ...more powerful than a locomo- tive ...Warner Home Video is able to leap tall buildings in a single bound whenit releasesvolume two in this must-have series. When we reviewed the show's first season, we cited the tight drama, first-rate acting and humor -essential ele- mentsthat havetranscended what manythought wasmerely achild's series based on a comic book into an important look at crime and society that still holds up. These 26 episodes simplyunderscore our point. As the Man of Steel and his alter-ego Clark Kent, George Reeves infuses his performances with gentle strokes of humor and humanity. Great Caesar's Ghost! Roscoe deals with it by writ- ing and by political activism. In 2000,shejoined forces withCotuit historian Jim Gould to help save hundreds of acres on the Cotuit- Mashpee border that were slated to become a private golf course. At the time, Gould called her "one of the few cultural geographers on Cape Cod." The playwright, who renewed her acting chops in 2004 with an acclaimed performance as Bananas in House of Blue Leaves at the Provincetown Theater, is a member of Cape Codders for Peace and Justice, one of the evening's sponsors. "Our concern is social justice and action on the Cape," Roscoe said, adding that two members "are coming up with a universal health care plan for the Cape, so working poor like myself can be really covered." Roscoe said the play is a col- laborative effort as well, with other playwrights appearing in several of the roles. A voice famil- iar from veterans' observances in Barnstable is Bob Silverberg of Centerville, a member of Cape Cod Veteransfor Peace, who plays the Announcer. Political junkies will note that Peter White of Yarmouth appears as Militia Man Shad Ledue. According to the play 's program , White , an outspoken candidate for local office on the Green Party ticket , "is form- ing a Peter White for Congress Committee.
