BOOK REVIEW... CONTINUED FROM PAGE 24 their tightiy-knit Italian family as well as how each , particularly Rick, learned not oniy to cope but to And joy in life again. The book follows Rick and his family from his graduation party in 1973, through the accident and the days and months that followed , to the present day. Readers share in the initial shock and uncertainty the D'Agostino family faces at seeing Rick lying motionless in the hospital , his head clamped between metal tongs used for traction. From there they travel along with Rick on his journey from patient to patent-holder when his disability provides him with the insight to invent products designed to enhance the lives of others in similar situations. This once struggling student comes to create his own business run out of a self-designed home built among the trees in West Barnstable. More than a simple recollection of events. Praying for a Miracle is a mother'spainstaking homage to her courageous son and the family that rallied around him when he needed them most. Although DAgostino'swriting is simple and occasionally overly technical , no doubt a reflection of her many years as a nurse, she makes it obvious that her love for Rick is deep and unwavering. It is also evident how greatly she cares for Rick's brother, Bob , and sister, Gina, as well as her steadfast husband , Tony. This is not a family that wal- lowed in misery, nor is this a family seeking the limelight. It is simply the tale of taking what life hands you and making the absolute most ofit. As D'Agostino so eloquently explains , "Rick broke his neck , but it didn 't break him." Gilda D'Agostino will sign copies of Praying tor a Miracle Jan. 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Borders Bookstore on Route 132 in Hyannis. All welcome for Senior Center movies... CONTINUED FROM PAGE 24 career has been goinginto a slow and steady decline. Desperate for a project that will give his reputation a jump start, Jack agrees to star in a film version of the once-popular television series Bewitched as hapless hubby Darrin Stephens, under the condition that an unknown actress be cast asthe female lead so he won't be upstaged. After auditioning dozens of women who fail to make the grade , Jack meets lovely and charming Isabel Bigelow (Nicole Kidman), and is immediately certain she's the perfect choice to play witch- turned-housewife Samantha. 1/27/06 The Greatest Game Ever Played (2005) The true story of an upset victory that helped change the sport of golf forever provides the basis for this period drama. Francis Ouimet (played by Shia LaBeouf) was born in 1893 to a working-class family in Massa- chusetts, and grewup fascinated by golf. However, at that time golf was considered a pastime of the wealthy and privileged, and British and Scottish play- ers dominated the professional game. Ouimet's familial home was near the Brookline Country Club, and over the stern objec- tions of his father, Francis got a job there as a caddy. Honing his skill in his spare time, Francis displayed a tremendous natural talent for the game and an un- derstanding of its strategies, and 1913hebecame the first amateur to play in the U.S. Open, held at the Brookline Country Club. MONDAY MOVIES 1/9/06 84 Charing Cross Road (1986) Helene Hanff's book 84 Char- ing Cross Road had previously been a TV program and a stage play before it was converted into this charming 1986 film. The scene is New York, 1949: Anne Bancroft playsa strugglingwriter and passionate bibliophile, who answers an advertisement from a rare-volumes bookshop at 84 Charing Cross Road in Lon- don. Thus begins a two-decade romance by correspondence between Bancroft and Briton Anthony Hopkins, the man in charge of the overseas depart- ment of Marks and Company. 1/23/06 Meet Joe Black (1998) The cycle of life on Earth hangsinthebalance when Death becomes emotionally involved in this romantic fantasy. William Parrish (Anthony Hopkins) is a tremendously wealthy and powerful man who oversees a worldwide multi-media empire. Despite the lossof hiswife, whom hedearlyloved,Williamiscontent with Ms life, and he's very close to his two daughters, Allison (Marcia Gay Harden) and Su- san (Claire Forlaini). One night, as William is fighting a hostile takeover of his company and Allison is planning an elaborate party to celebrate her dad's65th birthday,William beginsdisplay- ing the symptoms of a severe heart attack, and he is visited by a mysterious stranger, Joe Black (Brad Pitt). Joe is actually the angel of death, who has taken the form of a man who recently passed on to pay William a call. Fred Casley (Dominic West), a smooth talker who insists he can make her a star. However, Fred strings Roxie along a bit too far for his own good, and when she realizes that hisprom- ises are empty, she becomes en- raged and murders Fred in cold blood. Roxie soon finds herself behind bars alongside Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones) , a sexy vaudeville star who used to perform with her sister un- til Velma discovered that her sister had been sleeping with her husband. Velma shot them both dead, and, after scheming prison matron "Mama"Morton (Queen Latifah ) hooks Velma up with hotshot lawyer Billy Flynn (Richard Gere), Velma becomes the new Queen of the scandal sheets. It seems that William is due to move on to the next world, but (no great surprise) he doesn't want to go. Joe, on the other hand , is curious to know what life is like for mere mortals, so the two men strike a deal. 1/30/06 Chicago (2002) A starry-eyed would-be star discovers just how far the no- tion that "there 'sno such thing as bad publicity " can go in this screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Chicago , originally directed and choreo- graphed by Bob Fosse. In the mid- '20s , Roxie Hart (Renee Zellweger) is a small-time cho- rus dancer married to a well- meaning dunderhead named Amos (John C. Reilly). Roxie is having an affair on the side with OBITUARIES CONTINUED FROM PAGE 14 in Framingham. He worked in carpentry, welding and auto repair throughout the greater Boston area.
